Steven's voice was low and a little hoarse, carrying a hint of helplessness, but I knew he was just playing pitiful.
Even in the middle of the night, all he had to do was make one phone call, and a line of cars would show up to pick him up.
I looked up at him and saw his lips were pale. Despite his efforts to hide it, his body was trembling slightly, no doubt from being soaked in the rain for so long.
My resolve softened, and I sighed. “Just this once. Don't expect it to happen again.”
Steven's eyes instantly lit up, and he nodded vigorously.
We had to cross the living room to get to the stairs. Uncle Julian slept downstairs, and the lights in that part of the house were still on.
I wasn't sure if Uncle Julian was asleep yet, so I had Steven follow me as we tiptoed across the hall. I felt like a thief in my own home, my heart pounding in my chest.
Just as we were about to head up the stairs, the butler came down. Our eyes met, and I froze.
The butler glanced at me, then at Steven behind me. I expected him to lecture me like Uncle Julian would have, but instead, he just asked calmly, “Will you be needing men's pajamas? The young master just bought a few new sets that have been washed but not yet worn.”
“The young master” was Ryan. Remembering how ridiculous Steven looked in my clothes yesterday, I nodded. “Thank you!”
The butler went downstairs as if nothing were out of the ordinary. I pulled Steven up the stairs, yanked him into my room, and immediately shut the door.
I tried to calm my racing heart. Thank goodness we weren't caught. Uncle Julian and Ryan would have been furious.
Steven stared at me, one eyebrow raised. “Zephyra, do you know what this feels like?”
I rolled my eyes at him irritably and didn't reply.
