Hearing this, I paused, studying her with suspicion.
“I’ve already agreed to go abroad. You don’t need to say these things to trick me anymore.”
Rachel shook her head frantically. “Zephyra, I mean every word this time. You were so brave saving me just now. Based on that alone, I can't believe you're the monster she painted you as.”
I was speechless.
Rachel continued, “I was just deceiving myself before. I wanted to find some hope for Horace’s legs, so I brainwashed myself into thinking that if you left the country, his legs would miraculously heal.”
“Now I realize how incredibly wrong I was. Don’t worry, I won’t lie to you again. If you don’t believe me, I’ll stay far away from you. I’ll never see you again.”
Rachel cried as she spoke, her voice growing hoarse.
I looked at her. “Are you telling the truth?”
Rachel nodded hard, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I shifted to face her. “Then I have a question for you, and I need you to answer me honestly.”
Rachel sniffled. “Ask me anything. I’ll tell you everything I know.”
I met her gaze. “Where was Verna originally planning for you to take me today?”
I knew Verna’s plan couldn't have been this simple. She wasn’t a genius, but she wasn’t a complete idiot either. Hadn’t she considered what would happen if I sensed something was wrong halfway there and tried to escape from the car?
Rachel answered without hesitation. “To a remote cabin in the mountains. She said that except for weekends, it’s usually empty, so no one would know you were there.”
I pressed on, “And then what? Did she mention how she planned to get me out of the country?”
