I gripped Rachel’s hand, my eyes fixed on the door. It was only when Nelson walked in that I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
I knew he was a dangerous man, but at least he seemed to have some code of conduct and wasn’t lecherous towards us. As far as kidnappers went, he was probably the best we could hope for.
As soon as Nelson entered, his eyes locked onto me. Another man brought in a chair and placed it behind him.
Nelson dragged the chair to about a yard away from me and sat down. “Do as the person on the phone says,” he ordered.
I didn’t care who was on the other end of the line, but I wanted to know what was coming so I could prepare myself.
I stared at him. “What is it?”
Nelson leaned back in the chair, his tone commanding. “Don’t ask so many questions. Just do what she says.”
I was still wondering who “she” was when the man dialed a number. A familiar, chilling voice came through the speaker. “Is she there?”
It was Queena. My heart clenched.
Nelson grunted in affirmation.
Queena’s voice turned colder. “Put her on.”
Nelson handed me the phone. I hesitated for a moment before taking it. “Queena, what do you want?”
We had already had it out at the hospital, so there was no point in pretending.
There was a slight pause on the other end. “You have a good memory, Zephyra. Used to living in a mansion, aren’t you? How does a ruin feel in comparison?”
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. “It’s fine. Just tell me, why did you kidnap me?”
