Nina had mostly stopped wearing diapers during the day now. Benjamin would check every so often, quietly asking if she needed the bathroom.

That kind of gentle care made Amelia silently thank the heavens more than once. She was so glad that the man from that night had been him.

Nina was truly lucky to have Benjamin as her dad.

The new loaf tasted much better.

Amelia took a couple of bites, then glanced at the man who had eaten the awful one for her. After a tiny hesitation, she tore off a piece and held it out.

“Benjamin, this one’s good. Here,” she said.

She meant for him to take it.

Instead, Benjamin leaned over and ate it straight from her fingers.

His warm lips brushed the tips of her fingers.

For a full second, Amelia’s brain completely shut down. Her ears burned bright red.

“It is good,” Benjamin said. His face didn’t change at all.

He was so calm, and it made Amelia feel like the one with the racing heart was the weird one.

The car kept moving.

A privacy partition blocked the driver’s view and muffled any sound.

Amelia’s face was burning.

She couldn’t even look at him. She turned away, fanning herself with one hand while mumbling nonsense

excuses.

“I always get hot when I sit in the car too long. So weird no idea why.”

She babbled to herself.

When she finished, Benjamin silently handed her his plone.

On the screen was an online medical consultation he had just opened.

The question he’d typed out was simple, “Why does sitting in a car for a long time make your face hot?”

Amelia stared at the phone, then at the man who answered everything with action.

She was utterly speechless.

The fortune teller’s place they were headed to was more than two hours away.

Amelia tried to make conversation-mostly about Nina

She even showed Benjamin photos of Nina when she was smaller.

“This is right after she was born. She was so tiny, but already the prettiest baby in the whole nursery.

“This is one month-she slept all the time.

“This is two months-she started getting fussy. Megan and Aaron took care of her a lot back then. Aaron did the most.

“This is six months-she finally started solids.”

The photos she pointed out were solo shots of Nina.

But the album was full of pictures of the two of them together.

Benjamin’s gaze lingered on those-on the exhausted Amelia holding newborn Nina, face pale from labor but smiling brighter than anyone.

In that photo, Amelia’s face was still pale, but she was smiling-satisfied and bright.

From that moment on, Nina had been her only family.

“Amelia… can you send me the photos?” Benjamin asked suddenly.

Amelia’s eyes curved into happy crescents. “Of course!”

She looked at him, pride shining through. “You think baby Nina was super cute, too, right? I’m telling you, when she couldn’t walk yet, she was even chubbier than how. Way cuter!

“Once she started walking, she slimmed down a little.”

She bragged about her beautiful Nina with the biggest grin.

This adorable, gorgeous little girl had come from her!

Amelia felt like the most accomplished mom in the world.

Benjamin caught every bit of that pride and joy.

His Adam’s apple bobbed. He nodded. “She really was cute.”

Hearing him agree made Amelia’s smile even wider.

She handed him her phone and said, “Benjamin, just scroll yourself. Share whatever you want.”

There were no secrets in Amelia’s album.

To save space for more Nina pictures-and pictures of the two of them-she regularly deleted everything

else.

Benjamin took the phone but didn’t start sending right way.

He checked the time first and told her to nap while they still had a long ride.
