Chapter 164 One Strawberry Emergency
Nina burst into noisy tears and thrashed with all her chubby might.
Gideon saw that the strawberry was already gone from her mouth and broke into a cold sweat.
“William! Vincent!” he yelled.
He scooped the wailing Nina up and ran, shouting the whole way.
“Nina ate a strawberry! William! Vincent! She ate a strawberry!”
His voice cracked with panic.
William, who had only just fallen asleep, jolted awake.
He and Vincent burst out of their rooms at almost the same second.
They saw Gideon clutching a sobbing Nina, looking frantic.
Gideon said in a hurry, “Nina ate a strawberry. Her little hand was too fast-I couldn’t stop her!”
William’s face turned stormy.
He strode forward and took the crying child into his own arms.
The moment she was with William, Nina flung her arms around his neck and held on for dear life.
She had been terrified by Gideon.
“Grandpa… go home,” she sobbed.
Scared and hurt, Nina buried her wet little face in his neck and begged to leave.
William’s heart shattered. But beneath the heartache was pure fear.
“Gideon-how many strawberries?” he asked.
Finished
Gideon replied, “Just one! I really didn’t expect her to be that quick. I had one hand, and I never thought she’d grab with the other.
“And she stuffed it in her mouth in a flash!”
William knew exactly how fast those little hands could .
It had happened at home, too.
He knew, but he still turned his anger on Gideon.
“I told you at lunch she’s allergic-why were the strawberries even where she could see them?”
A child this small had no concept of allergies and zero self-control.
Adults were supposed to prevent every possible danger.
Right now, William was furious at Gideon-and at himself.

He was furious that he hadn’t foreseen this.
“William, I was resting in the backyard. I had no idea Nina would wander over,” Gideon tried to explain.
Vincent saw both their faces and felt awful.
“This is my fault! I never should’ve had strawberries in the house. Stop blaming each other-doctor first.”
Thank goodness Vincent had a private family physician on call.
While Vincent phoned the doctor, Nina-curled in William’s arms-started scratching her little face.
“Grandpa… I feel bad.”
Her baby voice had gone hoarse.
William watched her chubby cheeks turn red and swell right before his eyes. His breath caught in his throat.
“Vincent-the doctor! Where is he?!” he shouted.
“Coming, coming!” Vincent was panicking, too. He saw the redness spreading.
In their frantic waiting, the doctor finally rushed in.
Lucien who had just woken up and heard about the allergy-drove his little electric sports car all the way to the gate to fetch him.
Lucien had just woken up to the news that Nina was having an allergic reaction.
His head was still foggy.
The doctor wasn’t wearing his white coat, but Nina still wanted nothing to do with him.
“No!”
She buried her red little face deeper into William’s chest and refused to let the doctor touch her.
The doctor was used to it.
After years in pediatrics, every kid reacted the same way
Some even pointed toy guns at him through tears, pretending to shoot.
He could handle Nina with his eyes closed.
He softened his voice and coaxed, “Come on, sweetie, le me see your face.”
His tone was gentle, but his movements were quick and ure.
He turned her small, swollen face and examined it carefully.
After checking, he prescribed right away. “Give her this ratadine syrup. How much does she weigh?”
The dose depended on a child’s weight.
