Gideon hurriedly explained, “I’ll go with you to check o Nina.”
Amelia felt a bit helpless, but she couldn’t exactly stop him.
She kept walking. Gideon fell into step beside her.
He asked, “Amelia, William mentioned you’re allergic to strawberries, too. When did it start? From birth or later?”
“From birth,” Amelia answered. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve always reacted.”
Gideon’s heart thudded harder. “So because of the allergy, your parents never bought strawberries for the house, right? What do your mom and dad do, by the way?”
Amelia’s voice stayed calm. “I don’t have parents.”
Gideon blinked, confused. “How is that possible?”
“I was adopted,” she said lightly. “I’m no longer in contact with my adoptive parents.”
Gideon suddenly had nothing left to say.
He didn’t dare ask another question.
His face paled. He stopped walking. “Amelia, something just came up. I won’t go see Nina after all. You go
ahead.”
Amelia nodded. She hadn’t really wanted him along anyway.
For some reason, the second she’d met Gideon, she’d fell on edge.
The second he turned and left, the tension in her shoulders melted away.
She continued walking toward the little sports car Nina was riding in.
Not far away, Benjamin had been accompanying her. He had noticed every detail of Gideon’s strange expression.
Watching Gideon retreat almost like he was fleeing, Benjamin’s eyes darkened with thought.
He stayed where he was while Amelia found Nina.
Nina was sitting in the tiny sports car, no longer crying.
She gripped the steering wheel with both hands, giggling wildly as she spun it left and right.
Lucien hovered nearby, shouting directions. “Nina, slow down! Don’t crash into your mommy!
“Don’t hit your daddy!
“Let’s go hit Lucas instead! He was mean to me yesterday!”
Lucien was trying to recruit Nina for revenge.

But Nina ignored every instruction.
She caught sight of Benjamin and immediately aimed the car at him.
“Hit Daddy! Hit Daddy!” she said.
Lucien rolled his eyes. “What a devoted daughter.”

Nina was dead set on ramming Benjamin. Lucien, torn between his favorite person and Nina, finally just squeezed his eyes shut and gave up steering.
With Lucien blind, Nina drove like a chaotic tornado.
She missed Benjamin completely and slammed straight into a flowerbed.
Seeing her almost tumble forward in the seat, Benjamin quickly reached in and scooped her up.
Nina latched onto him, terrified. “Daddy! Nina scared!”
Benjamin raised a brow. “You weren’t scared when you were trying to run me over?”
Nina blinked up at him, completely stumped.
She had no answer-so she slapped a chubby hand over his mouth.
“Daddy, no talk!”
Benjamin stared at her, continuing to communicate his feelings silently.
Nina moved her hand up to cover his eyes instead.
While they played their silly game, Lucien-unrescued crawled out of the flowerbed, righted the tipped car, and sighed, “Nina, I’m getting you another custom car.”
This sports car clearly wasn’t safe for her yet, since she was still so little. He worried about flips.
Lucien really was hopelessly spoiling her.
Benjamin walked over and asked if he was hurt.
Lucien shook his head hard. “Nope! I’m super tough-Ion’t get hurt.”
The two of them always played well together. Lucien never minded that Nina was little.
Benjamin reached into his pocket and pulled out a small pouch with a tiny charm inside.
They had picked it up on the way back from the fortune teller.
The fortune teller hadn’t been able to explain why some people dreamed of the future or whether it came
at a cost.
