He walked over, ready to pick her up and take her away.

He didn’t want her standing there drooling over someone else’s toy. But Nina refused to leave.

“No hug.” She wriggled away from Benjamin’s arms.

She took two steps back and squatted again. “Play with Barry!”

She obediently crouched beside the little car and called, “Barry play!”

Barry saw how well-behaved she was being and cautiously tested the remote. The car zoomed forward.

The car rolled across the ground, and Nina jumped up, chasing after it with happy squeals.

The two kids were suddenly playing together. Benjamin stood nearby watching them.

Nathan glanced at him, standing guard over Nina, and laughed, “Last time Freya told me you were raising a kid, I thought she was joking. Never expected you’d actually be this good at it.”

Benjamin gave a quiet “Mm.” He and Nathan had never been close or hung out much, so he wasn’t much for conversation.

Nathan didn’t mind the quiet. He kept chatting casually.

While the adults stood on the side, the two little ones were now totally absorbed in the game.

Barry beamed. “I still have allowance money. I can buy you new toys, too.”

“Wooow! You so awesome!”

With every “wooow” from Nina, Barry’s carefully saved allowance suddenly felt very unsafe.

Nathan watched his son grinning like an idiot and laughed too, “My boy is usually super stingy. This is the first time he’s ever been this generous.”

Benjamin stayed silent, trailing behind Nina, who was grinning like a blooming flower, his gaze fixed on her the whole time.

The two kids ran pretty fast.

Nina forgot all about being tired once she started playing. She trotted on her short legs beside Barry all the way into the house.

There were other people in the living room.

Barry shouted toward the sofa, “Grandma!”

When Nina heard him call grandma, she instantly belted out in her loud baby voice.
