With that, Nathan headed off to rest.

Gideon watched him go, mouth opening, but no more words came.

He helped Jane back to her room, then found an excuse to step out.

The moment he left the room, the door to Emma’s room next door opened.

Emma called out, “Gideon.”

He was pulled inside.

The door shut. Emma didn’t throw herself at him or do anything that looked like an affair.

She was no longer young, and she felt no romance toward Gideon anymore.

She only wanted one thing confirmed. “You said Amelia is Mia-do you have any real proof?”

Gideon was silent for a moment, then shook his head. “No. Neither Jane nor I have done a paternity test with her.

“But I have a feeling she is Mia.

“Emma, if she’s found and brought back, that’s fine. She was so little when she disappeared- she remembers nothing.

“If she returns, you won’t be in any danger-”

Emma cut him off, “No! If she comes back, what happens to my Mia?!”

Emma had no feelings left for Gideon, but Mia was her only daughter.
