Amelia’s eyes went round. “Nina’s banquet-does it involve me too?”

“Of course.” Benjamin’s voice was calm. “You’re Nina’s mom. You’ll be there.”

Amelia was still a bit dazed.

Before she could react, Benjamin added suddenly, “By the way, I have a gift for you that day.”

Amelia’s curiosity was instantly piqued. “What gift?”

She was genuinely curious about what Benjamin was giving her.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he held out a box he’d been carrying in his right hand.

He said, “The gift for that day will wait until then. This one is for today.”

He opened the box. Inside was a pair of dazzling crystal high heels.

“Wow!”

Amelia hadn’t even processed it when a little milky voice let out a “Wow!” first.

In her excitement, she completely forgot about her milk.

She reached out with chubby hands to touch the crystal shoes.

“Mine!”

Lately, anything new automatically belonged to her.

“Daddy, mine.”

When no one paid attention, she repeated it louder.

Nina’s words snapped Amelia out of it.

She asked, “Y-you… why are you suddenly giving me a gift?”

Amelia stared at the crystal heels. She didn’t grab them like Nina.

She felt a little shy, blocked Nina’s reaching hands, and asked Benjamin.

Benjamin replied simply, “I saw them by chance. Thought they’d suit you.”

Amelia said softly, “Thank you.”

The shoes were already in front of her-she couldn’t refuse.

She thanked him and finally took them.

Nina had been ignored for ages. Seeing Amelia pick up the shoes, she scrunched her mouth and held it in.

“Mine!”

She looked up, squeezed her eyes shut, and was about to cry.

Only when Amelia saw her close her eyes did she free one hand to comfort her.

“Okay, Nina, no crying. These are high heels. You’re too little to wear them.”

She handed the shoes to Nina

Nina hugged them tight, sniffed, and stopped crying.

“Mine.” She added seriously, “Nina big… Mommy, Nina wear.”

Amelia shook her head. “You’re not big enough.”

The heels looked about two inches. Amelia wore high heels for work all the time—she could handle the height easily.

Nina? No way. She was so tiny she’d fall for sure.

Amelia refused to let her wear them. Nina hugged the shoes, scrunched her mouth again, and closed her eyes.

“Mommy, wear. Nina wear.”

Amelia sighed, “I’m done with you.”

She was utterly helpless against this stubborn little creature.

The romantic mood that could have come with a gift was completely destroyed by Nina’s interference.

Amelia gave in, lifted her off the bed, and put the crystal heels on her feet.

Nina’s plump little feet swam inside the huge shoes.

Amelia held her arms to keep her steady in case she fell. But Nina didn’t appreciate it.

“Mommy, no. Mommy, go away.”

She didn’t want Amelia holding her-she wanted to walk alone.

Amelia had been told to go away, so she actually let go.

Two seconds later, with no one holding her, Nina tumbled right to the floor.
