Chapter 296 You’ll Understand Then
“Grandpa.” Nina sniffled, still trying to call for Gabriel on Noah’s behalf.
Noah managed to pull the urn into his lap.
“Grandpa,” he echoed, his own voice trembling.

He tried to pry the urn open while talking to it. “Grandpa, Noah here. Grandpa, come out.”
Nina helped Noah try to open the box.
The urn was sealed tightly; this time, their little fingers couldn’t budge it.
Unable to open it, they decided to climb out and find a tool.
But when they tried to climb, they realized they couldn’t.
The coffin was deep, its walls smooth.
Most crucially, there was no stool inside anymore.
Nina couldn’t use it as a step.
“How out?” Nina asked, her little face utterly confused.
Noah shook his head. “Don’t know.”
They looked at each other, and finally both their lips started trembling.
Holding the urn, they burst into loud sobs.
Noah, even while crying, didn’t stop trying to open Gabriel’s urn.
The children’s crying from inside the mourning hall carried out into the courtyard.
The adults outside first thought they were hearing things.
But as the crying continued, their expressions grew increasingly bewildered and uneasy.
“My stress must be getting to me. I think I’m hearing things.”
“I hear a child crying. Do you?”
“Yeah…”

“Why does it sound like it’s coming from the mourning hall?”
“I hear it, too…”
“What’s going on? Is this some kind of haunting?”
It was still daytime. The sudden sound of faint crying from the hall containing the coffin thoroughly spooked everyone.

They recognized the cries.
It was their children.
Both adults broke into a run toward the mourning hall.
Sure enough, inside the coffin, they found two little tear-streaked faces.
“Grandpa, hold!” Nina cried, stretching out her arms to William upon seeing him.
William was momentarily stunned.
Instinctively, he pulled Nina out.
Before he could even ask what had happened, Nina was clutching her head, saying it hurt.
William saw a bruised bump swelling on her forehead.
Noah had one, too.
The two little ones, sporting matching bumps, were lifted from the coffin.
Noah was still clutching the urn.
He sobbed, demanding that Harper open it.
Harper’s corner of her mouth twitched. “Noah, we can’t open this.”
“Open! Want open! Find Grandpa! No Grandpa sleep. Want Grandpa get up! Mommy, I miss Grandpa!” Noah cried and fussed.
Nina, holding her own forehead, chimed in helpfully, “Open! Grandpa open! He want Grandpa!”
Both children, sobbing uncontrollably, were adamant about opening the urn. To the adults, the

They were too young to be scolded; they wouldn’t understand.
And their repeated pleas for Gabriel to wake up tugged painfully at the adults’ hearts.
The children didn’t understand permanent separation.
