Chapter 302 You Have No Money

Benjamin tried to calm the fussing child. “We’ll just do a quick check-up. It’ll be fast.”

He wasn’t sure if Nina had a viral cold, so an examination was necessary.

Nina wasn’t having it.

“Daddy, go home,” she insisted. “Nina go home.”

Despite her protests, the doctor came in to examine her

Nina had her blood drawn. She shrieked and wailed. Other children in the pediatrics department, hearing her cries, started wailing, too.

Nina had a knack for setting off emotional ripples.

Benjamin and William together couldn’t calm her down

Luckily, Amelia arrived quickly.

The moment Amelia appeared, Nina stretched out her chubby little arms, crying, “Mommy! Mommy!”

Amelia took her, soothed her for a moment, and then, with practiced ease, began consulting with the doctor.

This wasn’t the first time Nina had been sick.

Amelia had experience with colds like this.

She knew which medicine worked for Nina and how to treat her.

After waiting for the test results, Amelia took the prescribed medicine and took Nina home.

“This cold is contagious. She can’t go to daycare for now Amelia said, holding Nina close, not letting her go.

She said to Benjamin, “For the next week, Nina can’t eat anything random, especially nothing sweet.

“Her throat is clear now, but usually, the phlegm comes on the second or third day of her cough. If there’s too much, we’ll need to give her a nebulizer treatment. Do we have a nebulizer at home?”

As Amelia talked, Nina looked up at her with a pitiful expression.

When Amelia finished, Nina pouted and sniffled, “Mommy, I sick.”

Amelia sighed, “Yes, you’re sick.

“Nina, you didn’t listen to me. Didn’t I tell you? No running off.

“You sneaked out, caught a chill, and now you’re sick.

“Being sick means medicine. And you’re going to cry agin.”

At the mention of medicine, Nina immediately shook her head. “Mommy, I not sick,” she declared, punctuating her denial with two coughs.

She held back until they got home. Once there, she asked Benjamin to take Nina to the playroom while she went to the kitchen to check on dinner.

Nina’s diet needed restrictions, and she had to inform the cook.

Nina, now with Benjamin, didn’t want to play inside.

She pointed outside. “Daddy, go out.”

“We’re not going out. It’s dark,” Benjamin replied.

They had left around noon. The drive was slow, and the hospital detour took time. It was almost nine in the evening now.

Nina had eaten in the car, but Benjamin hadn’t had a thing.

He was hungry, too.

Seeing that Benjamin wouldn’t go out, Nina decided to go by herself.

Benjamin promptly picked her up before she could leave.

“Let’s go see your excavator,” he suggested, diverting her attention.

He took Nina to see her large, ride-on toy excavator.

The sight of the big machine she could sit in and “drive” finally stopped her from demanding to go outside.

“Daddy, I am so happy,” Nina said, sitting on the excavator.

Her chubby hands gripped the steering wheel, her little face flushed with excitement.

Benjamin stood nearby, recording a video on his phone

The excavator moved slowly as Nina pressed the pedal, driving it around the room.

She giggled with delight, her energy surprisingly high.

If not for the intermittent coughs, no one would guess she was sick.

Nina, carried away by the fun of the excavator, lifted he round little chin and declared in a proud, milky voice, “Daddy, I dig school.”

Benjamin replied drily, “Go ahead, then.”

“Okay.” Agreeing happily, she started steering toward the door.

Benjamin followed her, his tone casual. “If you go, I’ll call the police. They’ll come take you away.”

Nina huffed, angry, “No!”

Threatened once again by Benjamin, Nina’s rebellious sreak flared.

“Daddy, I crash you,” she announced, aiming the toy excavator at him.
