Amelia had been swamped lately and hadn’t gotten to send much time with her.

Seeing how down she looked, Amelia supported her chubby little body and said to her, “Nina, I’m getting off work a bit earlier today.

“When I’m done, I’ll take you and Nelson out for dinner

“We’ll go have dinner tonight, okay?

“Nelson’s birthday is today, I think.”

Amelia wasn’t totally sure-she’d heard Nelson’s birthday mentioned in passing once, but wasn’t sure if that was right.

She’d asked Nelson about it, but he’d just clammed up and wouldn’t say anything.

Seeing that, Amelia didn’t plan to make a big fuss about birthday celebration.

Even if they weren’t throwing a party, the day still deserved to be special.

When Nina heard her mom’s words, her eyes widened.

“Mommy, Nelson’s birfday?”

Amelia replied, “Mhm. You can think about what you want to give him today.”

She was still thinking about how to take them out to celebrate.

And at that very moment, she wasn’t the only one thinking about the two kids.

“Mommy, give gift?” Nina asked.

Amelia smiled and nodded. “Yes, you can give him a gift-anything you pick will work. He’ll like it.”

For a kid his age, Nelson was a bit more mature.

He always had a serious little face, so it was hard to tell what he was thinking.

But Amelia had taken care of Nina for years to know that Nelson’s emotions were actually easy to read.

She could read him pretty well-after all, he was still jus a kid.

Amelia knew that Nelson liked playing with Nina the most.

He also liked playing with Lucien and Barry, but he was little shy when he played with them.

As Amelia was chatting with Nina, the car pulled up to the daycare drop-off.

The second Nina saw the daycare door, her chubby little hands instinctively tightened around her mom’s

arm.

“Mommy,” Nina called out again, unwilling to give up.

Amelia gently but firmly pried her tiny hands loose and passed her off to Sally.

Sally took Nina and carried her inside.

After dropping Nina off, Amelia and Benjamin each went off to their own work.

Benjamin hadn’t been having an easy time lately either he had some tough stuff to take care of and needed to go abroad.

But he hated the thought of going overseas and leaving Amelia and Nina at home.

He knew there would be people looking after them at home-but none of them would be him, and just thinking about that made him frown.

Before Nina and Amelia moved into the Graham Residence, Benjamin traveled a lot.

He had been to many countries and experienced many things.

He’d never been one to get homesick, but now that he had Nina and Amelia, he couldn’t even leave the city without feeling on edge-let alone go abroad.

Nina was never still for a minute-she was far too energetic, and she was always getting into something.

Benjamin couldn’t stop worrying about his little Nina.

Thinking of that little troublemaker, Benjamin sat in his office massaging his temples.

None of their worries would ever be told to Nina.

Once she was settled in daycare, Nina was extra quiet today.

Her chubby hands rested on her cheeks, her little face serious, like she was deep in thought.

Sally was completely charmed by the sight.

She snapped a photo first, then leaned in and asked, “Nima, what are you thinking about?”

Nina furrowed her little brows and answered, “Gift.”

She was thinking about what gift to give Nelson.

She wanted to catch a bug and give it to Nelson- but Amelia had said she couldn’t give bugs to anyone from now on.

People were scared of bugs!

If she couldn’t give a bug, Nina couldn’t think of anything else to give him.

Realizing Nina wanted to give him a gift, Sally smiled and suggested, “Nina, we have a crafts class-you can give the craft you make to Nelson. We also have a baking class today-you can give him the treat you bake.”

Once Sally gave her ideas, the other kids in daycare started piping up with their own ideas.

One kid showed Nina the necklace hanging around his neck. “Nina, give this! Birthday, Grandma give!”
