Trevor might have been cold and sharp-tongued, but he wasn’t a violent man.
He tried to pull Nina off his lap, but Nina resisted with all her might, flailing and fighting back.

In the end, to keep her from tumbling off and getting hurt-and to avoid her bursting into loud, ear- splitting cries-he stopped moving altogether, his face stiff and expressionless.
Once he stopped, Nina sniffed loudly.
“I no go down.”
Trevor didn’t understand Nina at all. The harder he pushed her away, the more stubbornly she clung.
She was incredibly willful-very few people could make her listen.
Unable to dislodge her, Trevor simply ignored her again He turned back to his computer and continued working, face blank.
Nina asked a couple more times for Peppa Pig, but Trevor completely ignored her.
If anyone else had brushed her off like that, Nina would have thrown a fit long ago.
But Nelson had explained at the door. His dad was sick, which was why he acted this way and didn’t like talking to people.
For this sick person, Nina showed unusual patience.
When Trevor wouldn’t show her cartoons, she reached for the paper and pen on the desk instead.
She didn’t write neatly-she scribbled wildly.
After covering the paper in chaotic lines, she started drawing on the back of her own hand.
Black ink worked just fine on skin.
Trevor stayed utterly indifferent.
He let her draw all over herself without stopping her one.
Time ticked by slowly. Nina eventually turned herself into a little inky mess.
After finishing on her own body, she moved on to Trever’s hand.
Trevor kept his face cold and still didn’t move.
Earlier, when he had tried to lift her down, she’d cried loudly and dramatically.
Trevor had no interest in dealing with her tears. So to avoid hearing them again, he simply let her draw on

After a while, Nina-who had refused to leave his lap-arted nodding off. She’d napped that afternoon, yet here she was, drowsy again.
The moment Trevor noticed her eyelids drooping, he stood without hesitation and carried her straight

The door opened. Nelson, waiting in his wheelchair just outside, looked up at his father.
There was no warmth between them.
From the moment Trevor saw Nelson today, they had barely exchanged three sentences.
Now, Trevor said nothing more.
He simply held Nina out, expecting a servant to take he
But Nina clung tightly to his clothes.
“Hold more?” She refused to be handed off.
One chubby hand gripped his shirt like a vice while the other rubbed sleepy eyes.
After rubbing her eyes, she looked much more awake.
She glanced at Nelson in the wheelchair and said firmly. “Hold Nelson.”
Not only did she refuse to leave Trevor’s arms-she wanted him to pick up Nelson too.
Nelson had told her his daddy never held him, never spoke to him, never paid attention to him.
Nina could see how much Nelson wanted his dad’s notice, so she decided to build the bridge herself.
Trevor had no intention of granting her request.
He said coldly, “I have work to do. Go play by yourselves. Don’t disturb me.”
He really wanted to put her down.
But Nina was proving very difficult to put down.
To get rid of her, Trevor bargained, “If I hold both of you once, will you leave and play on your own?”
Nina nodded vigorously. “Okay!”
Her answer rang out loud and clear.
Trevor didn’t hesitate anymore. He bent down and lifted Nelson from the wheelchair into his other arm.
The moment Nelson was picked up, his small body stiffened.
It had been a very, very long time since his father had held him.
“Daddy.” Nelson’s soft, childish voice sounded right besie Trevor’s car.
For one brief second, something flickered in Trevor’s eyes-a moment of distraction.
Unlike Nina, who clung and refused to let go, Nelson didn’t try to stay in his father’s arms.
He sat quietly on Trevor’s arm without clinging.
