Before Trevor could finish, Nina’s chubby little hand clapped straight over his mouth.

From the moment she’d met him, Nina had grown used to Trevor’s icy demeanor-she could brush it off.

But hearing him speak so dismissively still stung her a little, even if it took her a second to realize it.

So she simply shut him up the only way she knew how.

Nina was bossy in the most innocent, childlike way.

Trevor’s sharp words died behind her palm. His expression stayed frosty, but at least the cutting remarks stopped.

While Nina and Trevor’s standoff continued awkwardly Nelson reached over to the side of his electric wheelchair and grabbed his small crutch.

He propped himself up and hobbled closer to Trevor and Nina.

“Nina, we can go play with toys,” he said.

“He together,” Nina said.

Nina was clever-she knew exactly how to keep Trevor from leaving. If he wouldn’t take her out to play, then she wouldn’t let him leave at all.

She clung to him stubbornly. Before Trevor could reject her outright, Nelson spoke up first, helping her out.

“Daddy… can you play with us? If you don’t, Nina will cr”

Once again, Nelson was pleading on Nina’s behalf.

Daniel-still chewing through his dinner-couldn’t keep quiet either.

He chimed in from the side.

For the first time, Trevor realized Smith Manor could actually be noisy.

In the past, it had always been deathly silent.

Time ticked by slowly. Eventually, Trevor ended up sitting in a chair in the toy room, holding a magazine and pretending to read.

Nina and Nelson sat together on the soft rug, playing with toys.

Nelson had a small robot.

The robot had lots of features, but Nina only cared about the music button.

When she pressed it, children’s songs started playing.

After a few songs she didn’t like, she shoved the robot at Nelson.

“Nelson, want dudu.

“Play dudu!”

Nelson had no idea which song “dudu” was.

He tried several tracks-none of them were right.

Nina only wanted “dudu.”

Just as her little face started scrunching up in frustration Daniel walked in at the perfect moment.

The second he heard the situation, he knew exactly what she meant.

She wanted Baby Shark.

Daniel played the Baby Shark song right away. Nina lit up instantly and started singing along happily.

Seeing how delighted she was, Daniel couldn’t resist learing down to kiss her chubby cheek.

“Nina is so smart! You even know the words to the song now!”

After praising her, Daniel decided it was time to head home.

“Nina, it’s getting late. We need to go home and find your mommy.

“Your mommy called me earlier asking about you.

“Your grandpa called too.

“Chloe sent messages.

“It’s time to go home and sleep.”

Daniel tried coaxing her gently, but Nina had slept in that afternoon-she was full of energy and had zero intention of going home to bed.

No matter how much Daniel talked, Nina just fiddled with the little robot, pretending not to hear.

Before long, one of the robot’s arms snapped off with a rack.

Nina lowered her head and tried to put it back together.

When she couldn’t manage it herself, she handed it to Nelson.

Either way, she was completely absorbed in fixing the toy and showed no sign of wanting to leave.

Daniel checked the time again. It was almost eight.

They really needed to go!
