Jack understood right away when Benjamin said Nina was sleeping.

He’d dealt with Nina enough to know how she got when woken up.

Jack said quickly, “Alright, I’ll make it short.

Nina kept her eyes squeezed shut and just threw a fit.

She opened her mouth and cried. Benjamin rocked her and patted her back, but nothing calmed her down.

Nina was having a sleep tantrum.

She was half-asleep and half-awake, and her little brain couldn’t handle the messy feelings.

It made her miserable, and unlike grown-ups, she didn’t hold back.

She just cried as loud as she could.

Luckily, she only cried for a few seconds before Benjamin used his phone to wake her up.

He said, “Nina, someone’s calling you. Do you wanna answer?”

She finally opened them, her tiny voice still tearful. “My call.”

Benjamin said, “Yep, it’s for you.”

He held the phone up to her.

Nina’s lip trembled, and she started crying again. “No. No him. No this.”

She reached out to swat the phone. Jack thought she didn’t want to talk to him at all.

Before he could feel hurt, Benjamin said, “Jack. Call back again. She wants to answer properly.”

Jack blinked and said, “Fine.”

He hung up and called right back.

This time, Nina held out her teary little finger and tapped the screen to answer herself.

When the call connected, and Jack appeared again, she finally talked to him.

Nina asked, “Where you?”

Jack replied, “I’m at home! Where are you, Nina?”

Nina stared blankly for a second.

She thought for a moment, then answered, “Car.”

Jack laughed, “Wow, you’re in your car? Can I come sit in your car with you?”

Nina thought and nodded. “Yes.”

Jack smiled, “You’re such a good girl, Nina.”

Tears still glistened in her eyes, but Nina grinned at the compliment. “Nina good.”

She touched her mouth, then suddenly said, “Nina yucky.”

Jack gasped, “Huh? Are you sick?”

Nina ignored the question. She held up the chubby finger where she’d had her blood drawn and showed it to Jack.

She babbled, “Hand bwood. Ouch. Nina cry.”

Nina told Jack every sad thing that had happened to her that day.
