He was only seven. The little boy was tied to the cold altar with chains of glowing runes, made of moonlight and shadow.

My father and mother sliced open their palms with ritual silver blades, then cut Samuel’s small wrist.

Their blood mixed with his, ran down ancient grooves, and soaked into those snarling, twisted

runes.

Then came the infusion.

It wasn’t a blessing. It was tearing him apart.

His fragile body was forced to contain a power far beyond his limits and a distorted shackle called “loyalty.” He writhed and shook in pain.

That scream, so raw it barely sounded human, still rang in my ears on quiet nights.

The ritual succeeded.

They told Samuel he was born to be the kingdom’s shield and my claws.

He took that to heart and played the role perfectly.

Did he ever hate them?

Maybe.

Or maybe he just locked that resentment away, deep down, along with every other soft emotion he had.

And I never stopped looking for a way to break the curse.

My kingdom didn’t need my brother to burn his own soul just to protect it.

But it was only two years ago that we discovered the curse’s cruelest side-it devoured the wolf spirit of anyone who bonded with him.

That stupid, greedy, low-rank she-wolf who tried to cling to royal blood became the tragic proof.

After just one night, she was nearly drained dry, her wolf spirit withered like dead grass in

winter.

After that, Samuel locked himself up even tighter.

He stayed away from anyone who might stir desire. He built a wall around his heart.

Laila was the only exception. She was the only one who made him want to fight for those three years-even if the chances were slim.

But no one knew how to break the curse.

“Your Majesty, at least now we know Prince Vance’s feelings for Laila are still as deep as ever, Walter said slowly.

“What good is ‘deep’?”

I snorted. “He fought me tooth and nail just now, but he was still too scared to say ‘I love her.”

“Your Majesty, that’s because you said you’d make Laila your queen. Of course he wouldn’t openly compete with you.”

“Excuse me? Did you see him? Griffin’s phantom was practically jumping at my face.”

Thinking of how he glared at me, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“That fight was more exhausting than a full day of meetings. But if he keeps dragging his feet and hesitating…” I half-joked, half-threatened, “I might really call the High Priest, pick a date, and make Laila my queen.”

After all, she was Lailie…

Laila’s POV:

“Hey, seriously, Laila,” Nita said excitedly in my head as we ran back to Silvermoon Pack.

“Between those two brothers, who do you like more? King Vaughn or Prince Vance?”

“Neither,” I replied simply. I meant it. Neither of them was an option.

“Oh, come on!” Nita sounded like she’d just caught me in a lie. “It’s because they’re both so amazing that you can’t choose, right? Same here!
