As soon as she sat at the banquet, she started badmouthing Laila with genuine resentment.

“While Holt was away at war, Laila messed around with other he-wolves.

“She showed me no respect. After she broke the mate bond, she even stopped Rowan from treating me!

“And her temper is awful. She replaced the Omega cooks three times. If the roast wasn’t perfect, she whipped them. If there was one extra bay leaf in the stew, she made them stay on their knees all night…”

Once people started talking, the rumors spread quickly, and Estelle pushed them along. In less than ten minutes, most of the Lunas there believed Laila was cruel and wicked.

Some knew that wasn’t true, but they stayed quiet, afraid of being targeted as well.

A few minutes passed. Laila still hadn’t shown up, but Morgana arrived.

She hadn’t wanted to come. Seeing Estelle always felt like standing in the cold wind with old wounds open. Estelle had hurt Morgana too many times. Morgana would rather climb ten mountain ridges than sit in the same room with her.

But she still came.

Estelle’s invitation felt like a collar around her neck.

If she stayed away, the Royal Court would start saying she was arrogant and disrespectful to her elders.

Morgana swallowed her anger and walked across the red carpet, her boots hitting hard. The beads in her hair clinked as she moved quickly.

Then she heard the whispers.

A tight circle of ladies sighed and twisted pity into poison, cutting up Laila’s name piece by piece.

Morgana froze, heat burning in her throat.
