The sky outside the window was dark as dusk. Rain hammered the stone walls, kicking up a fine white mist.
I stared at the curtain of rain and thought of Samuel’s silhouette as he’d left.
I hoped his trip to Moonlight Academy was going smoothly.
“Stop right there! Holt!”
Pearl’s voice ripped through the rain like a warning howl-shrill, urgent.
“This is Ms. Conlay’s den! You are not coming in!”
“Move! I need to see Laila!”
The voice made my fingers clench on instinct.
Holt.
What the hell is he doing here?
“Ms. Conlay doesn’t want to see you!”
“Have you
asked her-”
“I don’t need to!” Pearl’s voice was nearly shredded raw. “She will not see you! Not in this life!
Not ever!
“When she married into Ironclaw Pack, how did you treat her? And that Maris—”
Pearl’s words cut off.
Not a stop.
A severance.

A massive wave of Alpha pressure rolled from the direction of the doorway, as though it meant to crush everything in its path.
He actually dared.
I heard the growl rip from my own throat, low and furious.
Bones cracked, and silver fur burst through my skin.
By the time my mind caught up, my wolf paws were already pinning a soaking-wet, warm body to the ground.
His spine was pressed into the mud under my weight.
“You still have the nerve to show up and cause trouble at Silvermoon Pack?!”
My voice ground out from the back of my throat, layered with Nita’s snarl, rolling through the rain, across the courtyard, across his face-pale and soaked.
“Laila…”
Holt lay in the mud, staring up at me.
His throat bobbed.
“Are you really … going to marry Prince Vance? Do you love him? When did you fall for him?”
“None of your business!”
“Tell me I need to know, Laila!”
–
“You ask, and I have to answer? Who the hell are you to me?”
I roared and threw him out.
He didn’t fight back. He just stood nailed to the gate like a wolf guarding territory, refusing to. leave.
“Laila! Tell me, or I’m not going anywhere!”
“Suit yourself!”
I slammed the den gates shut.
He could stand there as long as he liked.

I wasn’t the one getting soaked in the rain.
:.
I didn’t bother checking on Holt again. Pearl, though, peeked out every now and then.
Ten minutes later, she came back and told me-
“That bastard left.
“Only lasted ten minutes. And here I thought he had patience.”
I smiled but said nothing.

He’d always been that way-too proud to stand at someone’s gate and let every passing wolf judge him.
“Forget him. Get ready-we’re heading to Frostfang Pack as planned!”
“Yes, Ms. Conlay.” Pearl went off to prepare.
I stared at the sky-wide curtain of rain, a cold dampness settling in my chest.
That morning, Pearl and I had been cleaning out the storeroom, sorting through the things I’d brought back from Ironclaw Pack. Anything worth selling, we sold. The rest got shoved into a
