“She won’t.” Holt shook his head again, firm. He could see it clearly. Laila carried the pride of the Conlays in her bones. Once she turned away she would never look back.

“You’re sad. I can feel it,” Vick murmured quietly in his mind.

“No, I’m not.”

Holt refused to admit it. If Laila would never return, then he would never regret it either.

Back in the Royal Court, the Alpha King was slowly tracing the edge of a small painting with his fingers.

It was something Laila had drawn for him back when he was still Kain’s student. He had kept it all these years.

“Why did I convince myself she made up false intelligence just to take revenge on Holt and Maris?” he muttered. “I didn’t believe her…”

“You’ve been apart for too long,” Cyrus said lazily, his tail flicking in their shared consciousness. “You became strangers.”

“Perhaps.” The Alpha King pressed his lips together. “So much time has passed. If not for this incident, I might’ve forgotten that Conlays’ blood runs in her veins.”

The Conlays were a clan with unbreakable souls. Even an Omega would never lose herself to love and obsession.

Laila’s POV:

Snow fell over Vagen Battlefield. Not heavily, thankfully. Training was essentially complete. There were about 50,000 new recruits now. 20,000 were Beta warriors, 30,000 Gamma, with a handful of Omegas assigned to logistics and medical support.

I’d only seen Prince Vance once in the past two days. After hearing that I’d enlisted, he came by personally and asked if I wanted to stay close to him. I declined. I wanted to remain with my classmates.

He didn’t seem offended. He nodded, told me to be careful, and left.

Watching his back disappear, Stick clicked his tongue. “They say Prince Vance can summon wind and snow. So why doesn’t he make this stop? We’re not nearly as good at fighting in the snow as those Ovilan wolves.”

“Idiot.” Viola smacked the back of his head. “Those are just rumors. What werewolf controls the weather? That’s the Moon Goddess’s domain”

“Tsk. Disappointing. Very disappointing.” Stick rubbed his head. “And he’s not even that handsome. All scruffy and wild-looking. Sounds good, though.”

Viola rolled her eyes. “Is he the only one? Look around. Every veteran here looks half-feral. Except the recruits.”

She was right.

I looked around at the bearded, weathered warriors and felt both admiration and a quiet ache.

On Vagen Battlefield, they’d spent more than two long years grinding themselves down. Once, my father had led them. Now, Prince Vance did. But they’d never left.

Their eyes were calm, emptied of passion or fear. Only resolve remained. Every soldier still standing here carried a single thought-Reclaim Vagen. Drive those Ovilan bastards back where they came from.

On Christmas Eve, the war began.
