We fought from night until dawn, killing until our limbs went numb, yet the enemy seemed endless. It wasn’t until a long, piercing wolf howl cut through the chaos that the warriors of Ovila Kingdom and Solantia finally pulled back.

The blood-soaked Christmas Eve came to an end.

I couldn’t help wondering how many nights like this my father and brothers had endured.

This battle belonged to Rydar. We’d won.

Once the enemy retreated, Omega soldiers from logistics moved in to clear the field, carrying away our wounded and counting the enemy dead. My classmates and I leaned against a wall, all of us drenched in blood.

“Laila,” Viola panted, “how many did you kill?”

“I don’t know,” I said, lifting my arm. It felt unbearably heavy. “I stopped counting after 30.”

War was exhausting in a way nothing else was. You couldn’t pause for even a second. The moment you did, an enemy’s claws would be at your throat.

“I kept count,” Manu grinned. “55.”

“It’s 63 for me,” Viola added.

A sudden shout rose from the crowd nearby. A moment later, Woodrow shoved his way through and ran straight toward me, eyes blazing with excitement.

“Ms. Laila!” he exclaimed. “Do you know how many enemies you killed?”

“No. I lost track.”

“Awoooo!”

He let out a full-throated howl, fangs flashing. “Prince Vance personally tracked your pheromones. You took down over 300 Beta-level enemies. Holy hell, Laila, that’s incredible! Is this really your first time on the battlefield? You’re worthy of being General Conlay’s daughter!”

“Is that so?” I laughed softly. “I honestly don’t remember.”

Woodrow stared at me with open admiration. “Yes. If General Conlay were still alive, he’d be

so proud of you.” His eyes reddened at the end of the sentence, and the sight made my chest ache as well.

After a brief silence, he wiped at his eyes. “Go on. Prince Vance is waiting. He said there are rewards to be given.”

“Really?” Manu’s eyes lit up. He grabbed my hand and Viola’s. “Come on! We’re getting promoted!”

We hurried to the main command tent, already packed when we arrived. The moment I stepped inside, every gaze turned toward me. They looked me over from head to toe, then one by one, their eyes went red.

Finneas looked especially close to tears.

“Well done, Laila,” Prince Vance said. His eyes were bright, almost blazing.

“As expected of the Conlay bloodline!”

“That’s incredible. My first battle was nowhere near that clean. I threw up afterward.”

“General Conlay truly raised an exceptional daughter.”

Voices overlapped around me. I smiled, a little embarrassed. I knew they were praising me partly for my father and brothers.

Especially Prince Vance, his gaze hardly left me

Inside my mind, Nita snapped to attention. “Hey. Stop looking at us like that. Damn it. Fine, I admit he’s smart, strong, and rich, but that face? And that mess of a beard? Absolutely unacceptable.”

“Is that so?” In my good mood, I teased her. “I actually think his beard’s kind of sexy.”

“What?” Nita stared at me in disbelief. “Say that gain. That tangled disaster is sexy? You can’t possibly be serious. Laila, don’t you dare fall for him. Do you hear me?”

She spun in frantic circles in my head. I couldn help laughing.

Samuel’s expression turned solemn. He stepped forward, his tall frame casting a shadow over me. “Laila, receive your reward.

“My decree you are hereby promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, commanding 1,000 troops.”

He turned to the others. “As for the rest of you, you are promoted to Captains, assigned under Laila’s command. You will follow her orders.”
