Samuel’s POV:

Am I a coward?

Maybe.

“I don’t have the standing to care about her,” I said inside my mind, as much to Griffin as to myself. “She was married. She had a mate. I can get too close. That would only cause her trouble.”

“Married my ass,” Griffin snorted. “She’s not even marked. I don’t smell another male’s pheromones on her at all.”

“Maybe they had a fight,” I said after a pause. “But even so, I can’t take advantage of that and step in. That would be destroying her family.

“And besides, Holt was chosen by Laila’s mother herself. I promised her I would-”

The memory of Silvermoon Pack’s Luna surfaced, and I let out a quiet sigh.

“In any case, if I show too much concern and she misunderstands, she’ll be unhappy. I don’t want that.”

“Fine. Do whatever you want,” Griffin said, rolling his eyes and going silent.

I dropped the matter.

When the fighting paused and my betas finished calculating merit for the officers involved, I immediately sent for Laila.

“Congratulations, Laila. You’ve earned another merit.”

The moment she stepped in, I couldn’t stop myself from giving her a thumbs-up.

“Didn’t you just say you shouldn’t care too much” Griffin muttered.

I ignored him. This wasn’t overstepping. This was a proper commendation.

I found myself studying her more closely.

Her face was smeared with enemy blood, dried and clotted like a dark crust. Compared to when she first arrived at camp, she looked far worse now. Back then, she’d been exhausted and flushed from the cold, but still unmistakably beautiful.

Now, at first glance, she barely looked like a she-wolf at all.

Her hair was a mess, stiff with dried blood splattered there during the fighting. Strands twisted and fell wherever they pleased, refusing any order.

Her clothes were torn and soaked through, her face smeared with blood and grime, not a clean patch anywhere.

She looked like she hadn’t washed or rested in days-so disheveled that even a beggar on the street might’ve seemed better put together.

“Does it hurt?” I asked suddenly.

I remembered the girl I used to see every year at Moonlight Academy, vivid and fearless, full of reckless vitality. She felt like an entirely different person now.

“Hungry,” Laila said. Her cracked lips parted just enough to let the word out.

That was cute.

I almost smiled, but forced my face straight. “Everyone’s hungry. Endure it.”

“Tired,” she added weakly. “Standing hurts.”

“Laila.” I deliberately kept my tone stern, a hint of mischief creeping in. “Did you know that since Rydar Kingdom was founded, no warrior has ever killed that many enemies in their very first battle? Not even your father. You were extraordinary. So straighten your back and walk out of this tent properly.”

Laila’s ears flicked. She lifted her chin, puffed out her chest, and strutted out of the command tent, hands on her hips, limping along with exaggerated pride.

I couldn’t help laughing.

But as the laughter faded, something tight and bitter rose in my chest.

Such a good girl. If only the Moon Goddess hadn’t denied me the chance to be her fate mate.

Just then, my beta stepped in. “Your Highness. Latest report. Holt and General Duffy will reach the camp in ten days.”

Ten days?

Good.

When the time came, I was going to ask Holt exactly why he still hadn’t marked Laila.
