Once I heard Holt was coming, my heart refused to settle. And only after arriving at Vagen did I truly understand how brutal the front lines were. My father and five brothers had endured this for years.
I could endure it too. But I hadn’t told the marshal or the generals the truth about Holt and me. It felt wrong to leave it unspoken.
How was I supposed to say it?
That the man my mother chose for me had won his first battle and then discarded me, choosing Maris instead?
They’d probably think I came to Vagen out of resentment, trying to prove I was better than her.
I didn’t care what the Ironclaw Pack or the Royal Court said. But this was a battlefield. The battlefield where my father and brothers had died.
I couldn’t let my choice to carry on their legacy be mistaken for petty jealousy.
Still, the truth would come out. Once Holt and Maris arrived, there’d be no hiding it.
I sighed and sat up, only to realize the snoring around me had stopped.
“Laila, can’t sleep?” Stick asked quietly.
“Yeah,” I said. “Too much on my mind.”
Everyone sat up. Chase leaned against my shoulder, eyes still closed. “What’s bothering you?”
They were exhausted. War drained you in ways academy life never had. Not enough sleep. Not enough food.
I hesitated, then decided to ask them. “I want to tell the marshal about Holt and me. Do you think if I say it outright, he’ll assume I came here just to compete with Maris?”
Stick blinked. “Isn’t that why? I thought you wanted to out-rank her.”
“Even you think that?” I sighed. “Then they definitely will.”

Viola scratched her head. “I don’t get it. So what if you’re competing with her? You are better. You’re an alpha. She’s just a beta.”
“But that’s not why I’m here.” I said. “My father and brothers died at Vagen. I came to help Prince Vance reclaim it. That’s their unfinished wish. I don’t care about Holt anymore.”
Stick nodded quickly. “Right. You always said you wanted to become a great general like them.”
