The pain was insane, like her soul was being scorched by the silver. Maris let out a primal scream as her vision went dark.

She didn’t know what kind of symbol or word they had branded onto her, but the bone-deep shame told her one thing: this mark would be with her until the day she died.

Once they were done branding her, the warriors started beating her with leather-wrapped fists and heavy combat boots. They weren’t trying to kill her quickly. They wanted her to feel every bit of pain and humiliation.

She lay on the ground. Every breath felt like her organs had shifted out of place. Her whole body hurt, and she was drowning in despair.

As her mind slowly slipped under from pain and freezing cold, Holt’s face flashed through her mind.

He wasn’t coming.

The Alpha who marked her, who once gave her protection and standing, now felt as far away as someone from another world.

She had once been the pride of the Rydar Kingdom. The first shewolf to earn the rank of Colonel through military achievements, even though she was born a Beta. She had dreamed of earning her place as the Luna of the Ironclaw Pack through honor. Now? She was dying like filth in the middle of nowhere, alone in the freezing cold.

And Laila…

That Alpha, who was born into fame and power was going to walk right over Maris’s grave to become even more powerful.

Not fair.

That deep resentment burned like a tiny spark, barely alive in her freezing soul.

Just as she was about to lose consciousness, a tiny voice-maybe from far away, or maybe just inside her head-whispered to her, “Do you … want to live?”

Chapter 76 The Mark Is Gone

“Yes, I do…”

Was it a hallucination?

A dying fantasy?

Or was something actually talking to her?

She was too weak to even care.

Meanwhile, miles away in the snowy wilderness

Holt suddenly grabbed his chest, his face turning pale.

Victor was growling and whimpering in his mind. He felt a sharp snapping sensation, followed by a hollow, freezing emptiness.

“What’s wrong, General Enclaw?” his adjutant asked, noticing something was off.

Holt didn’t answer right away.

He closed his eyes and tried to sense the mate bond, but…

The faint connection that had always been there-like a fragile thread in the wind-was completely gone.

It wasn’t faded because of distance. It wasn’t quiet because she was unconscious. It was like it had been wiped away, covered, or tainted, leaving behind total emptiness.

In the world of werewolves, there are only a few reasons an Alpha loses the feel of his mark.

The marked person is dead.

The mark was forcefully replaced or removed by a stronger Alpha.

Or the wolf spirit carrying the mark was violated and tainted, causing the bond to collapse…

No matter which one it was, it meant Maris was in deep trouble.

“Maris…” The veins in Holt’s forehead popped. A wave of anxiety and dread washed over him like ice water.

He had to do something!

By now, it was pitch black outside.
