The glow of the campfire flickered across Laila’s calm face. She and Viola exchanged a quick, complicated look.
Holt was frowning, his Alpha energy making the air feel heavy. “I’m serious! Before the mate bond completely broke, I felt her last mental scream. She was terrified and in agony!”
Laila poked the fire with a stick. Sparks cracked and flew. She said nothing.
“Laila, I’m not lying! She’s in danger!
“Right before the mate bond snapped, I felt extreme pain coming from her side!”
Holt growled, the veins in his neck bulging. “A normal injury or passing out wouldn’t feel like the bond was being violently trashed and ripped away!”
Laila stayed silent. The flames danced in her dark eyes.
Holt shook his head in disbelief.
“Laila, are you really going to let her die? My soldiers said hundreds of troops left with her. Are you not going to save them either?”
“Want to save her?” Viola cut in sarcastically. “Then go yourself, oh mighty Alpha Holt. No one’s tying your legs down.”
Holt glared at her. “The army is under Major General Conlay’s command right now. I can’t just take soldiers and leave camp on my own!”
Laila finally looked up at him.
After a moment, she said, “Holt, you’re right. Maris did fall into the Solantian soldiers’ hands. But we can’t rescue her. All we can do is wait here.”
Holt’s pupils shrank in shock.
“What do you mean?”
He grabbed Laila’s wrist. “Laila! You know she was captured? Where is she?!”
“Holt!”
Viola’s hand instantly shifted into a wolf claw. She swung at him, forcing Holt to let go and

She stepped in front of Laila, baring her fangs. Talk if you want, but don’t put your hands on her.”
Holt was furious, but he didn’t want to argue with her. He kept staring at Laila. “Answer me! Do you know where Maris is or not?”
“No.” Laila shook her head. “I don’t know her exact location. But I’m sure she’s somewhere in these mountains. But we can’t send the whole army to search the mountains blindly. Too risky.”
“Then what are we waiting for?!” Holt was losing it. “Are we waiting for those bastards to get into a good mood and send her back?!”
Laila met his burning stare and said slowly, “Yes. We’re waiting for them to handle it’ themselves.”
Holt stared at her in shock. “Are you crazy? They went through all that trouble to catch her. Why would they let her go?”
Laila’s expression stayed cold. “They will.”
Holt froze. “What do you
you mean?”
Laila stared at him. “You don’t seriously believe Silas pulled his troops out of Lovanfall back then just because Maris spread a rumor that Prince Vance was coming to help, do you? Holt, if you believe that, then you’re not fit to be a general. You’re not even fit to be a good soldier. That was never possible.”
A chill ran down Holt’s spine.
It wasn’t like he had never doubted it. Even the last time he questioned Maris, he knew something felt off.
But he had chosen not to dig deeper. The treaty was signed. The war was over.
His voice started shaking without him noticing. So, what was the real reason? Why did Silas sign that treaty?”
He stared into Laila’s eyes, like he was trying to find the long-hidden and disturbing truth.
“You’ll find out. But not now. And not from me!
Laila closed her eyes.
Holt knew she was done talking.
