Chapter 78 A Token of Affection
Laila’s POV:
After Holt left, I stayed by the fire.

Werewolves didn’t really need fire to stay warm, but the light in the dark still gave a fake sense of comfort.
Still, when the flames flickered, the color sometimes looked like blood.
I stared at the fire and suddenly remembered the day I returned from Ironclaw Pack to the Silvermoon Pack. There were bodies and blood everywhere.
Blood soaked the tundra under the moon. Even the wolf’s footprints looked sticky.
Pain hit my chest all at once, like sharp ice spikes stabbing me over and over.
I closed my eyes.
Of course, I wanted Maris dead.
But death was too easy.
Once someone dies, they don’t feel pain anymore. Their souls return to the Moon Goddess. That was not a real punishment.
I wanted her to stay alive and feel every single bit of agony.
Silas probably thought the same way.
That was why I believed he wouldn’t kill her.
Samuel told us to wait here. He probably already had some kind of silent agreement with Silas-they didn’t trust each other, but they were working together on this.
Late that night, Finneas arrived with supplies.
Dried venison and hard cheese.
He bowed to me and whispered, “Prince Vance says to keep waiting here. But make sure you have guards on duty at all times. Don’t slack off.
Then he pulled out a small dark jar. The jar had the Silvermoon crest carved on it.
“His Highness sent this just for you. It’s black honeycomb mixed with cloudberries.”

I was taken aback.

Black honeycomb was hard to collect, and cloudberries only grew along the cliffs within Silvermoon Pack territory. That was the taste I knew best as a child.
“Ooh, is that a token of his affection?” Nita teasel, wagging her tail inside my head.
Viola chimed in, “What about me? Didn’t we get any? Only Laila gets one?”
Finneas just smiled and said nothing.
I took the jar. My fingers touched the cold ceramic.
Somewhere deep down, I felt a tiny spark of warmth.
After giving the orders, Finneas took his men back to the city.
Even though we had taken Vagen back, the battlefield was still a mess. They had to move the bodies of our fallen soldiers, collect scattered armor and weapons, and try to tell friend from foe on land soaked in blood.
Victory always smells like rust.
Many of the soldiers who went into battle-maybe even your best friend-would never know we won. They were gone forever.
Holt didn’t return with his men until noon the next day.
Every face looked exhausted. Clearly, they found nothing.
After grabbing a quick bite, they crashed to get some rest.
At three in the afternoon, Holt came to find me. His eyes were sunken in.
“Laila,” he said hoarsely, “I want to search north one more time before dark.”
“Do whatever you want.”
I shrugged. “Those are your soldiers, not mine.
His throat moved as he stepped closer. “My men are worn out… but your soldiers are well rested. If we run into Solantian troops or wandering Rogues, your soldiers could help-”
I looked up at him.
