Third-person POV:

Laila didn’t answer right away. She just looked at him.

Holt swallowed hard. His voice dropped, almost pleading. “I know I shouldn’t ask. But you’ve heard what the full moon does to someone with that mark. If she’s still injured from the caning, she’ll really die. This is my fault. I failed you. It’s on me-”

Laila cut him off coldly. “Since you know you’re wrong, how can you still beg me for her? Holt, did you forget the blood debt my family paid? She can’t escape that. I want her dead more than anyone. And you’re asking me to help her?”

She tilted her head slightly, her golden eyes full of mockery. “Did a Rogue eat your brain or something?”

Holt couldn’t say a word. His face turned pale.

He looked at the woman in front of him. Her expression was cold, her eyes cutting like a knife. His thoughts began to drift uncontrollably pulling up distant memories. On the marking night, he had undressed her, caressed her breasts, and felt her fiery passion.

That night, her eyes were soft and full of love.

Now, there was nothing but cold distance.

The more he thought about it, the worse it felt.

“I know I was wrong. I failed you once. I can’t fail her either.”

Laila almost laughed. “Then take her punishment for her. You’re her mate-you can stand in for her. Or is your loyalty just words? Can’t handle a few lashes?”

Tired of watching him act guilty and devoted, Laila turned and walked away.

The next afternoon, sunlight stretched across the camp.

After finishing her work, Laila headed to the commander’s tent to see Samuel. She heard that the legion was preparing to return to the Royal Court.

Inside, Samuel was carving something from wood with a hunting dagger.

When Beta announced her arrival, he quickly covered the item with dark velvet cloth and

said, “Come in.”

Laila’s POV:

“What’s the matter?” Samuel asked.

As soon as I stepped inside, Nita sniffed lightly in my mind.

“What’s that smell?” she asked.

“What smell?” I replied silently.

She focused on the man behind the desk. “It’s him. His scent feels different…” She paused, then added slyly, “Wait-don’t tell me that’s your scent from that sparring match on the cliff, and he’s kept it this whole time? That’s impressive. Unlike you, you ran to the creek at dawn and scrubbed off every trace of him!”

I stopped myself from rolling my eyes. “Nita, your imagination could run a whole theater.”

Ignoring her teasing, I stood straight in front of $amuel. “Marshal Vance, the army is about to leave for the capital. Before we break camp, may I … visit the place where my father and brothers fell? I want to call their spirits and bring them home.”

Their bodies had already been returned and buried in the sacred grove of the Silvermoon

Pack.

But I believed that if their spirits were still watching, they would stay in the land they died for until they saw Vagen taken back.

Samuel nodded slightly. “That’s only right. But you don’t need to go by yourself.” His voice softened. “I went for you. I brought back a piece of hemlock from that valley. It was soaked in their blood.”

He lifted the dark velvet cloth from the desk.

Under it were several dark brown wooden tablets, almost finished. Faint red lines ran through the grain, like dried blood.
