“Prince Vance…”
My throat felt tight.

I stared at him and at those half-finished wolf carvings. For once, I didn’t know what to say.
In the sacred grove of the Silvermoon Pack, there were memorial crests for my father and brothers. But whenever I returned, I couldn’t bring myself to look at them for long.
If I avoided looking, it felt like they were just away on a long march and hadn’t come back yet -not names cut into cold stone.
I took a slow breath, trying to calm the ache in my chest. When my eyes moved, I saw a small charm resting on the velvet near Samuel’s hand. It looked strangely familiar.
“What’s that?”
It was an old leather charm, braided and worn. In the middle was a small, polished slice of hemlock wood. The edges were smooth from years of handling. Faint scratch marks covered the surface, copying the Silvermoon Pack’s guardian totem, but the lines were stiff and uneven, like they were carved by someone young.
“Just something from a long time ago.” His gaze rested on it briefly. Then he lifted it, slipped it over his head, and tucked it under his uniform collar. “It’s a keepsake.”
Oh.
It must have been a gift.
From a she-wolf, maybe?
I nodded quietly and didn’t ask further.
After a while, I said softly, “Since you already planned everything, I won’t go.”
It wasn’t that I didn’t want to.
I was afraid.
That valley where my father and brothers died was a place I still couldn’t face. It felt like a dark cliff I couldn’t step near.

I was scared that if I went back, the last memory tied to my scent would break the fragile peace I’d built.
“When you return, what will you do?” Samuel picked up his carving knife again, sounding almost relaxed. “Apply for an official combat role in the military? Or take the usual path-find a strong mate, steady your bloodline, and continue the Conlays’ honor and power?”
“My mother… she doesn’t want me living by the blade forever. All she wants is for me to stay away from war.”
“What about you?”
He raised his eyes and looked straight at me. “Forget what others expect. What kind of future do you want to claim?”
“I followed her wish.”
I held his gaze and answered clearly, “I formed a mate bond once. I ended it not long ago. And now…
“I’m not looking for another mate. Not for now.”
Samuel smiled at that.
“Good.” His voice held approval. “Honor your mother’s wish and give it everything for one time is already enough. Your path should be shaped by your own will and your own claws.”
My heart skipped, and I smiled back. “Yeah.”
I moved to sit beside him.
“Your Highness, do you have another carving knife? I would like to finish these with you.”
