Chapter 96 Holt, Help Me
Laila’s POV:
“Ugh-ah! Moon Goddess… Please… Make it stop!”
A sharp scream ripped across the camp, turning into wild howls.
It was Maris!
That was the cost of staying under the protection of the Stillmoon Sanctum.

Every full moon, the Moon Goddess Sacrificial Mark that shielded her would bring terrible, unbearable pain.
The patrol outside stopped walking.
“Is that General Duffy?” a young soldier whispered. “That scream sounds worse than Rogues with broken legs.”
“She asked for it.” The older soldier snorted in the dark. “She ignored orders, acted alone, and got captured. During the siege, she even messed up the formation of the armored war wolves. If Military Officer Enrod hadn’t reacted quickly, we wouldn’t have taken the wall.”
“She tried so hard to grab the credit and ended up like this. Serves her right.”
“At least General Enclaw took the punishment for her.”
“Fifty lashes to the bone,” a third voice said coldly. “But that was just a show in front of his own men. None of us from Vagen respects him. When he earned merit, he ran to the Alpha King for a marriage reward, then abandoned his mate. A man like that doesn’t deserve to be called a soldier.”
Their voices faded as the patrol moved on.
“I hope she doesn’t survive tonight!” Nita growled in my mind.
I pressed my lips together. Honestly, I hoped she would survive.
I hoped she would suffer this inhuman pain every month for five years.
And when the protection ended, I would kill her myself.
Just then, Samuel walked out of the tent.
Soon, he came back carrying roast venison, black bread, and a hot jug of spiced mead.

“You must be hungry. Have some.”
He smiled. “We can’t let such nice background music go to waste.”
Background music?
It took me a second to realize he meant Maris’s creams.
“Oh, I like him.” Nita wagged her tail happily in my mind.

I gave a small smile. I took the cup from Samuel, clinked it against his, and drank it all at
once.
Maris’s POV:
“Please… Stop…”
Pain burst through me like liquid silver burning inside my veins.
It felt like invisible claws were tearing me apart from within.
Every bone cried out. Every nerve was on fire.
The worst part was that the contract forced me to stay awake. I couldn’t faint or escape. I had to stay aware of every second of this torture and prove my soul’s purity to the cold Moon Goddess.
No wonder the old records said most sacrificers either went insane or killed themselves before the third full moon.
My wolf spirit, Rhea, whimpered in my mind.
It hurt so much that I wanted to die.
But the pain made my hearing sharp, and I caught the sounds outside the tent. There were soldiers’ mocking, Samuel’s low chuckle, and the soft clink of Laila’s cup.
They were drinking while I screamed.
Hate swallowed the pain at once.
Why should I be the one to die?
Laila was still alive, sitting in my place and stealing his attention.
Why didn’t those Solantian assassins kill her as well?!
