Twelve massive drums pounded a primal rhythm, every beat shaking our chests, stirring the wolf in our blood.
The pace picked up, like a pack running under the moon. Claws tore frozen ground, breath became a storm.
Priests began chanting.
It was an ancient wolf war song. The lyrics were long lost, leaving only deep, echoing syllables that spiraled between drums and horns-as if unseen wolf spirits gathered above, howling.
Samuel stopped three steps from the city gate.
He lifted the soul plaque, showing Kain’s carved wolf silhouette and name to the gate, Alpha King, and the capital they had sworn to defend.
Then he stepped forward.
With the soul plaques guiding us, carrying the honored dead as our vanguard, we moved into the gate, steady and deliberate.
The crowd went silent, broken only by stifled sobs and ragged breathing.
Many werewolves-both commoners and nobles-narrowed their eyes into sharp slits, instincts flaring with raw emotion.
As we passed under the archway, we dropped to one knee before Alpha King.
It was a warrior’s salute to their ruler.
Samuel’s voice cut through the square, steady as stone but sharp enough to break the silence.
“Your Majesty, I, Samuel Vance, with the spirit of Kain Conlay, and all who fell at Vagen-
“We return home today!”
“Where the wolf’s claws reached, our land stands reclaimed!
“Where our oath led us, our shame is washed away!
“We have not failed our duty!”

Howls, cries, and shouts mixed with fists pounding on chests. Many warriors couldn’t contain themselves anymore. They threw back their heads and howled. Wolf cries rose and fell,
blending with the rolling drums and horns.
Alpha King stepped down the stone stairs.
He reached out first, gripping Samuel’s shoulder tightly. It was the Alpha’s way of showing full trust and respect.
Then he turned to my father’s silent soul plaque, lifted his finger, and sliced a line across his palm. letting a drop of blood fall onto the carved wolf’s head.
“By this blood. the honored spirits live forever the sacred grove. Their glory burns on in our line.”
His low voice carried clearly to every ear.
Finally, he came to me.
I straightened, holding my brother’s soul plaque firmly, eyes lowered.
“Laila Conlay,” he said my full name.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” I answered, strong and stealty.
He studied me, those piercing dual-pupiled eyes seeming to look right into my bloodline. “Kain’s blood still runs warm. The Conlays’ how hasn’t faded. Do you dare follow the path of your father and brothers?”
I met his gaze without flinching.
“Where the claws lead, there lies the Conlays’ path. I’ll never turn away.”
A sharp glint of approval flashed in his eyes. He nodded his chin slightly.
Then he faced the crowd, letting his voice sweep over them like waves.
“Tonight, we’ll light the holy fire at the Moon Altar! We’ll bring the enemy chieftain’s skull as an offering. With victory’s spirit as witness, reward the armies and let glory shine on every claw and every drop of blood!”
Wild, almost animal-like cheers tore through the square.
