The day of their return to Carrington Bay had finally arrived.
Since morning, the Miller mansion had once again been bustling with activity. The suitcases that had been unpacked were now neatly arranged near the entrance. Servants moved back and forth carrying luggage while the sound of conversation drifted from various corners of the house.
But unlike the first day Naomi arrived in Sun City, this time there was a strange feeling she couldn't quite explain. A feeling that made her steps seem a little heavier as she descended the stairs.
Maybe it was because she had unconsciously grown accustomed to hearing Grace running through the corridors. Accustomed to seeing Josh appear out of nowhere with ideas that often made no sense. Watching Eli, who was never without her thick books. Or maybe it was because, over the past few weeks, this house had gradually come to feel far warmer than she had ever imagined.
Naomi let out a quiet breath before walking toward the front hall, where everyone had already gathered.
Nathan and Riana were also coming to see them off at the airport. Grace was the one who had the hardest time accepting the fact that Naomi was leaving.
"I don't want you to go home this soon." The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around Naomi's waist. "You just got here."
Naomi almost laughed. "I've been here quite a while."
"No way," Grace huffed in protest. Feeling the need for validation, she turned to Josh. "How long has Naomi even been living here?"
Josh let out a quiet sigh. "Two weeks."
"And that's already too long, Grace." Naomi smiled faintly. She gently patted the top of Grace's head.
The little girl only became more whiny. She said this and that, trying to persuade Naomi to delay her departure. Grace had always possessed an extraordinary ability to make people give in.
"I want you to come back." Grace tilted her head up from within their embrace. "Soon, you have to visit me again. I'll show you some special places."
Naomi was about to say something when the little girl immediately added, "And you have to promise. No backing out."
Grace loosened her embrace and held out her pinky. Forcing Naomi to make a promise with her. "Okay?"
Naomi looked at the small face gazing at her expectantly. In the end, she let out a quiet sigh and said, "All right." She hooked her pinky around Grace's.
Grace's smile immediately widened. Only then did she seem satisfied.
As if unwilling to be outdone, Josh held out his pinky as well, this time pulling Eli into it. He said, "You have to make a promise with us too. You've never seen my skills in a basketball tournament, right? And you still don't know what Eli sounds like when she's singing while playing the piano."
