Naomi’s brows immediately furrowed deeply. She clearly did not appreciate that reaction.
Seeing that expression, Chris shifted slightly in his seat until he was facing Naomi completely. “You really aren’t going to let this topic go, are you?”
“No.” The answer came without hesitation.
“Stubborn.”
Naomi let out a soft huff. She did not even try to deny it.
Silence settled between them again. But this time, it was different. Not awkward. Just two people who were equally exhausted after a long day.
In the end, Chris gave in. For some reason, Naomi’s gaze tonight made him surrender.
“All right.”
Naomi immediately adjusted her sitting position. Even her eyes seemed to brighten slightly.
Chris had to suppress a smile. “I’m only answering one question. And I hope you understand.”
They continued looking at each other. Then, for the first time that night, Chris allowed a small part of his past to surface.
“I didn’t chase after Felicia.”
A faint smile appeared on his face, but this time it was different from usual. It was the smile of someone remembering something that had long since passed but had never completely faded away.
“Because there are some people,” he said, his voice quieter than usual, “who are better left to go than forced to stay.”
Naomi did not answer immediately. She studied Chris for a long moment. For the first time since she had known him, the man looked more serious than ever before. As though there was a part of his story that he had never told anyone.
And strangely enough, Naomi did not want to force him.
“Did she leave you?” Naomi asked softly.
Chris chuckled. It was not a happy laugh, nor was it a sad one. More like someone who had just heard a question whose answer no longer mattered.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?” Naomi frowned in confusion.
“I left her too.”
That answer made Naomi knit her brows. “That doesn’t help me find the right answer.”
Chris laughed.
