Daniel immediately protested, "Absolutely not. You've just returned to the Sinclair family. If we take this, people will say we had ulterior motives. We saved you because it was the right thing to do, not for a reward!"
"Mr. Whelan, there's no need to be so formal with me. The Whelan family has treated me with such kindness, and Elena literally saved my life. If I don't look after you, who should I look after? This house isn't extravagant, nor is it huge; it's just a token of my gratitude. I simply want you all to have a better living environment. That's all there is to it!"
"We can't accept it! We really can't! We appreciate the thought, but no!" Amanda chimed in, equally adamant.
"Well... that might be a problem," Dylan said, feigning a troubled expression. "You see, I've already put the title deed in Elena's name. So, technically, this house already belongs to the Whelan family. It would be a shame to leave it empty and let it go to waste, wouldn't it? Elena, don't you agree?" Dylan glanced at Elena, signaling her with his eyes.
Elena didn't really want to accept Dylan's charity either. However, she thought this was a perfect opportunity to improve her parents' living conditions. The last time she brought it up, they had stubbornly refused.
"He's right, Mom, Dad. We should move," Elena said. "The roof here leaks every time it rains, and the walls are rotting away. If there were ever an earthquake, this old place would be the first to collapse. After all these years, you deserve a change of scenery."
Seeing Elena take his side, Dylan felt a surge of victory.
"In my heart, you are like my own parents. If you keep standing on ceremony, it feels like you don't see me as family. The house is in Elena's name, so no one can take it away. You'll have peace of mind living there. If you still refuse to move, then I'll kneel right here and beg you!"
As he spoke, Dylan actually dropped to his knees.
He would never forget those dark days when he was paralyzed. It was Amanda who brought him his meals, feeding him spoon by spoon.
When he soiled himself, it was Amanda who washed his clothes by hand without a word of complaint.
He remembered Mr. Whelan's constant encouragement and fatherly love.
He remembered Ben carrying him up and down, wiping his body daily, never grumbling once.
And, of course, Elena's meticulous medical care.
The kindness of the Whelan family was something he would cherish for the rest of his life. What was a single house compared to that? In the future, everything he owned would be Elena's, and by extension, the Whelans'.
