Daniel treated her so well.
He never looked down on her, and when Amanda was pregnant, Daniel stayed by her side every day. Why couldn't she meet a man like that?
"Uncle Daniel, Aunt Amanda, just admit your mistake and say a few soft words. Grandma's health isn't good, and she's getting old—she just turned eighty. Don't make her angry. Grandma doesn't truly want to hit you; she just wants an apology!" Jane urged the couple.
Daniel replied, "Jane, I know you mean well, and you're a kind girl. But we didn't do anything wrong today, and we will not apologize!"
"Uncle, why do you have to be like this? Isn't it better for the family to be at peace?"
The old lady looked at Jane, finding some small comfort. In this house, only Jane gave her no trouble and deserved her affection.
"Look at this. Look at these two ungrateful wretches. They aren't even as sensible as a child like Jane! Even Jane knows about filial piety, yet you two, at your age, still contradict me. My life is so bitter! I worked so hard to raise you, and this is how you treat me!" The old lady began to wipe away tears and wail.
Daniel and Amanda lowered their heads and fell silent.
Maggie couldn't stand it. Seeing that the old lady might let them off the hook, she wasn't about to let it go.
"Daniel, Amanda, our Cathy's face is swollen. They are cousins, after all. Why did she have to be so brutal? You have to give us an explanation!"
"If you want an explanation, come to me!" Elena's voice suddenly rang out from the doorway.
Maggie saw Elena and instinctively shrank back. Everyone knew how unhinged she was now—she didn't even respect the matriarch. She was not someone to be trifled with.
