These were Max’s parents, not hers.
Mrs. Holt glared at her coldly. “Can’t you see my son is injured? You attacked him, and you have the nerve to complain?”
“I...” Emily was stunned.
“You really are a jinx. The first day in our house and there’s blood. The Holt family must have been cursed to end up with a woman like you. Get out! Go back to the Sterlings! How dare you strike my son!”
“I just got here and you’re kicking me out?” Emily couldn’t believe it.
“Why would we keep you? Don’t you know? Your brother was scammed out of hundreds of millions. He’s in the hospital. The Sterling family is sinking, and now you’re trying to latch onto us like a parasite. No wonder your mother was so desperate to have the wedding—she wanted to tie our finances together before the ship sank! We aren’t going to be your saviors!”
Emily’s eyes widened in horror. The family was ruined?
She scrambled for her phone and dialed Melissa.
“Mom!” she wailed.
“Emily, what is it?” Melissa sounded weak and exhausted.
“Mom, Max hit me! The whole family is bullying me! Please...”
Melissa rubbed her temples. Her son was hospitalized, the company’s liquidity was gone, and bankruptcy loomed. She had no energy for Emily’s marital spats.
“Emily, you’re a married woman now. Our family is in a crisis. You need to grow up, please your in-laws, and try to get them to help us. Stop complaining.”
“Mom, I...”
The line went dead.
