Jane swayed on her feet, nearly collapsing to the floor.
She clenched her fists, biting her lip.
"Miss Sinclair, I know your family is wealthy and powerful. I told you it was an accident. Since you have so much money, why are you making this so difficult for me? One dress is nothing to you!"
"Oh, so we're playing the victim card now? Yes, I have plenty of dresses like this, but that doesn't give you the right to guilt-trip me. Just because I have money doesn't mean I don't deserve to be compensated for my ruined property! Right, everyone?"
The crowd knew exactly where the power lay, and they all sided with Evelyn.
"Exactly! If you make a mistake, you face the consequences. Don't try to play the victim here!"
"Look at her, she's not exactly destitute. If she were some poor waitress, maybe we'd let it slide."
"Even if she were poor, she shouldn't try to guilt-trip anyone! Forgiveness is a favor, not an obligation."
"You can really tell she's from a low-class background. It's just a multi-million dollar dress, and she's panicking like it's the end of the world."
The whispers grew louder and more ruthless.
Jane couldn't bear the humiliation a second longer. Covering her mouth, she sobbed and ran out of the banquet hall.
Standing off to the side, Bianca and Elena had watched the whole thing with great interest.
"Well, I didn't even have to summarize that one for you. How was the live show?" Bianca asked.
