“Natalia! What a surprise. I didn’t know you were in town.”
“Just visiting,” I said.
“Without Alpha Andrei?” She looked around like she expected him to materialize out of nowhere. “Where is he?”
“He’s “I hesitated. What was I supposed to say? That he had sent us away because he was afraid he might hurt us? That he was having violent visions and couldn’t control himself? None of it would make any sense to anyone. It didn’t even make sense to me.
“He’s back in Moonshadow,” I finally said. “Taking care of pack business.”
“She’s lying,” Max’s voice suddenly cut through the air.
I looked down at him, my mouth hanging open. The woman froze. “Oh?” she asked, glancing between us.
“Daddy’s sick,” he went on with his hands on his hips. “He’s sick at home and my mom abandoned him. She left him all alone.”
The woman’s eyes widened. She looked at me, then back at Max, mouth opening and closing wordlessly.
“Max, honey, that’s not what happened,” I said softly.
“Yes, it is. You abandoned him, just like you did when I was a baby.”
“Max-”
I didn’t have a chance to finish before he running. “My word!” the woman gasped, pressing her hand to her chest. Max fled down the street, weaving between people, his little legs pumping as fast as they could go.
“Max! Max, wait!” I grabbed Jane’s hand and ran after him, the other pushing the stroller ahead. “Max, stop!”
He didn’t stop. He didn’t even look at me. He turned a corner, disappearing from view. My heart pounded as I dragged Jane along, trying to keep up. Hope started fussing from the bumps in the sidewalk, but I didn’t slow down.
We rounded the corner and I froze, scanning the crowd. Where was he? There were too many people. Too many faces. I couldn’t see him.
Suddenly, I spotted a flash of his jacket near the market stalls.
I hiked Jane up onto my hip, finding it easier to just carry her, and raced after Max. I nearly bowled a woman over with the stroller. She shouted, jumping out of the way. “Hey! Watch it, lady!” she exclaimed.
“Sorry!” I shouted over my shoulder. “Max! Please stop!”
He darted between two stalls, but I caught a glimpse of him slipping into an alley before he completely disappeared again. I clenched my jaw and followed, skidding to a halt between two buildings and gasping for breath. Thankfully, it was a dead end. Max was standing at the end of it, frozen.
He wasn’t alone. There was a man standing in front of him. He was tall, with dark hair and bandages covering half
of his face.
Isaac.
My stomach dropped when I saw him. His face was battered and bruised and he looked like hell. What was he doing here, in Ashmoor of all places? My traumatized mind immediately went to the worst possibility–that he had come for revenge. That he was going to hurt one of my children because Andrei had hurt him, nearly killing him and possibly even scarring him for life.

I set Jane down and took a step forward.
Isaac looked down at Max, then his eyes lifted and met ming. But to my relief, he didn’t look angry. In fact, he smiled.
“Hey there,” he said gently, crouching down to Max’s level. “You okay, little man? Giving your mom a run for it, huh?”
Max didn’t answer. Just stared at him.
Isaac straightened and looked at me again. “Luna Natalia,” he said as I approached. “It’s good to see you.”
