Do you remember what he looked like?”

It’s all a blur. Sorry.

I nodded slowly, looking around again. I spotted Max on the other side of the yard, returning to his work with a group of other

males.

What’s the labor for?I asked. Are we building something?

We think it’s for an army. The stone we break gets moved. The wood that gets cut gets moved. We never see where it goes, but there’s a lot of it, and there’s a lot of us. Whatever they’re building, it’s big.

I filed that away for later. I hoped she was wrong, but deep down, I had a feeling she wasn’t.

What’s your name?I asked.

She looked up at me. Sara. You?

I’m the Luna of Moonshadow,I said quietly. Your Alpha reported you missing. You were on a list that came across my desk. Her eyes widened. Goddess above, you’re a Luna? How the hell did you end up here?

Long story.I looked around the camp, at the rows of workers filing back to their stations. How did they take you? Were you alone?

Her face crumpled. I was meeting someone. A guy I’d been seeing for a few months; a rogue. Or so I thought. Turns out, he was working for these guys the whole time.” she shuddered. Bastard.

That sounded a little too familiarrogues working for the dark forces at play. The Winter King’s followers had found a new leader. The Lord’s Red Hand, perhaps.

Just then, the demon standing nearby grunted, and Sara stood. So did I. She said nothing else, just shot me a thin smile that was more like a grimace, then shuffled off.

I spent the rest of the workday going over escape plans in my head.

The shackles were the main problem. Without my wolf, I wasn’t strong enough to break out of them. I needed to get the shackles off before anything else, and for that, I needed a key. I kept an eye on the demons for a long time, monitoring their movements whenever I could. They occasionally entered what must have been some kind of headquarters.

If a key existed, it was probably in there.

At the evening meal, I kept my head down, but quietly searched for Max. I spotted him sitting with his head down at a table, not even eating. My heart cracked.

I looked down at my bread, tore a small piece from the inside of the loaf, and pressed the note I’d written during the workday into the gap. I’d written it on a scrap of cloth torn from my shirt, using a small piece of charcoal I’d found.

Guard house. Key inside. Can you get it? You’re fast and quiet.

I folded the bread back together, then walked past him. Without stopping, I accidentallydropped the bread by his feet. He gasped quietly, picking it up, and met my gaze. I didn’t look at him, not wanting to be too obvious..

Just then, I felt something cold and smooth touch my shoulder. My heart stopped as a hand roughly turned me around, claws digging into my skin.

The demon simply pointed at me, then jabbed a finger over its shoulder and began to lead me away.

I felt sick, but I followed it calmly. It couldn’t have known about the note. Not yet. At least, that was what I hoped for.

The demon led me over to a hovel, where it opened the door and shoved me inside so roughly that I fell to my hands and knees. I hardly had a moment to recover before another pair of hands hauled me to my feet.
