Chapter 577

But I would do it, because the alternative was my children going through whatever came next, and that was not some willing to consider.

I wasn’t certain yet. That was the only reason I was still trying so hard now. Because there was still a small part of me thought that there must be a shred of Andrei left in there, and until that part of me was dead, I wouldn’t let go.

Finally, unexpectedly, the door opened.

Andrei was standing over me with a pair of pliers in his hand, positioned around one of my fingernails. My voice shool as I recounted our sex life to him. I looked up to see a man in bone armor standing there.

Apologies for the interruption, Sir.

Andrei huffed hotly, but didn’t pull away. What is it?

I have to tell you something, the man said.

With a growl of frustration, Andrei set the pliers on the table, which he’d pulled closer during the session, as if even wall across the room to get tools that wouldn’t accomplish his goals was beginning to grate on him. He turned and followed t to the doorway.

This had better be important,he muttered.

While their backs were turned, speaking in hushed voices, my eyes dropped to the table.

There was a thin metal rod near the edge, about four inches long, with one end tapered to a point. It was a tool I hadn’t see use yet, small enough that it might not be immediately missed.

I looked at them. They didn’t see me.

I shifted my weight in the chair and reached. The shackle caught and the spike bit into my wrist, but I kept my face complet still and my fingers closed around the rod. I drew my arm back slowly and tucked it up into my sleeve, pressing it flat agains

forearm.

Then I put my hand back in my lap and looked at the wall.

Andrei was still talking to his subordinate in a low voice. I couldn’t make out most of it, but if I strained my ears, I could make out a few words.

The boyHe’s gone.

My heart stopped.

Max? I thought. Gone as ingone gone, or just missing?

I strained my ears further.

What do you mean, gone?Andrei hissed. He sounded furious.

The man wrung his hands. Missing. Must have escaped. No one can find him.

Holy shit.

Max escaped.

My heart thudded violently. I wasn’t sure how he’d managed it, or where he’d gone, but he’d escaped that awful camp. And if Andrei was searching for him, then that meant he’d potentially escaped this, too.

Andrei turned and looked at me. I quickly schooled my expression into one of neutrality.

The boy who came through the portal with you,he said. Where would he go?

I don’t know what boy you’re talking about,I said.

He studied me for a long moment. I looked back at him, blinking slowly, forcing my face not to react.

Take her back to the cell,he said after a few moments, then stormed out.

The guards came forward. I stood and let them lead me out, and I kept my arm pressed against my side to feel the rod still f against my skin. All the while, I maintained the neutrality in my expression, even though a smile was desperately trying to at my lips.

Max had gotten out.

But that also meant that he was somewhere out there in that wasteland, on his own, with no water and no map and no way! truly protect himself. He was eleven years old. Even if he was fast and quiet and smart, it didn’t mean he could survive.

I walked back up the corridor and stared straight ahead and thought, very hard, as if he could hear me: stay hidden, Max. Whatever you do, just stay hidden, and survive.
