Sweat broke out across Gavin’s back in an instant. He was sharp enough to admit the truth: the woman’s voice on the PA sounded like Loyce.
But how? How could she be on the ship? How could she know the plan? How could she have gotten aboard?
Questions churned—until one possibility surfaced, and his face tightened. He yanked open his door, gathered the men rushing to him, and stormed toward the room where they’d kept the “donor.”
Two guards were still posted outside. Seeing Gavin’s urgency, they snapped straighter. “What is it, Mr. Quinn?”
“The donor’s inside?” Gavin asked, low and dangerous.
“Yes. Been there the whole time. We didn’t leave.”
“Open it.”
They obeyed immediately.
The bed inside was empty. No donor. No body. Nothing.
“That’s what you call ‘didn’t leave’?” Gavin kicked one guard so hard he folded, then spun and shouted, “Find Sapphire. Now!”
Elsewhere, Sapphire—already in the operating area, being prepped to assist—heard Loyce’s voice over the loudspeakers too. She knew Gavin would connect the dots instantly. And she knew who he would punish first.
The guards around her were trading tense whispers, trying to figure out what was happening. Sapphire edged toward the door, casual as she could manage, then slipped out and ran. She dove into a random crew cabin and hid in the closet. Almost immediately, footsteps thundered past. Voices shouted her name.
“Where is Sapphire?! Where’d she go? Mr. Quinn wants her! She brought the enemy onboard—this was a setup!”
“Find her! Alive or dead!”
Sapphire clapped a trembling hand over her mouth. Terror filled her eyes. For the first time, she regretted agreeing to help Loyce. If Loyce didn’t survive whatever came next, Sapphire would be buried right alongside her.
