“Cyrilla, the restaurant’s security footage only shows Loyce sharing her study notes with our teachers. There was no exam leak like you claimed. The Department of Education has reviewed it, and I’m willing to make this report go away,” Clayton said, his tone softening slightly for Lucian’s sake. “But if you continue to question this, the school will discipline you directly. You have class, so go on back.”
Cyrilla shot up from her chair so abruptly that it fell over with a crash. Her eyes were red-rimmed and brimming with tears. Unable to hold back, she covered her face and ran out of the room.
“Principal, that was too much,” the Dean said, watching her go. “I doubt she’s the only one who thinks that. With rumors spreading this fast, plenty of people are still going to believe Giselle cheated.”
Of course, it was human nature. Given Giselle’s previous academic record, her classmates had every reason to be suspicious of such a massive leap.
Clayton sighed, rubbing his temples. “Don’t I know it? I heard Cyrilla was also tutored by Loyce before. How did she end up regressing so much? With Loyce’s notes, it should be hard to do poorly.”
An official from the Department of Education sipped his coffee and opened a notebook. “We still need to go through the proper procedures.”
After running out of the conference room, Cyrilla received a call from Hallie. Her choked sobs on the other end of the line made Hallie, who was calling to ask about her results, frown in concern.
“What’s wrong? Did you not do well on the exam?”
“It’s nothing, Hallie. I just came from the principal’s office… I just don’t get it,” Cyrilla’s tears streamed down her face as she spoke, her voice breaking. She carefully avoided mentioning her own poor score. “How can the Lonsdale family have so much power? Loyce was even able to get the exam answers for Giselle. I know Loyce’s grades in high school were at the bottom. How could she possibly have tutored Giselle into the Ace Class? She… she just did it to prove she’s better than you, Hallie, so she helped Giselle cheat.”
The exam papers may have been sealed, but the answers were available from the start. Besides, everyone in class had been praising Cyrilla, expecting her to be the dark horse of this exam. Now, Giselle’s score had completely crushed hers, and Loyce hadn’t shown the slightest consideration for her feelings.
Hallie’s brow furrowed. She had come to Victory High specifically to see the results of her educational efforts. Hearing about Giselle’s score, she had to admit, it sounded fake. Giselle had barely attended any of her tutoring sessions. Could Loyce’s amateurish efforts really get her into the top fifty and help her ace the advanced questions designed to filter out geniuses? It was laughable.
