"Being with him doesn't offer me any kind of future," Giselle said, wiping her tears. "So I rejected his apologies. But he still thought I was just throwing a tantrum, and even told me not to push my luck. I wanted a clean break, so I lied and said I had a new boyfriend."
"You know the rest." She sniffled. "He lost his mind and ran a background check on Angus Lawton, a guy I've been hanging out with lately. Angus just happened to be interested in me, and Hank dragged him right into the crossfire."
Her voice cracked with fresh outrage. "He's been watching me! Every single interaction I had with Angus was reported back to him. He's completely insane!"
Loyce patted her shoulder, silently offering comfort.
By the time Giselle had fully settled down, it was late into the night. They shared a bed, and by the next morning, Giselle was finally in a better headspace, able to think somewhat clearly about her situation.
Getting out of bed, Loyce looked at their wrinkled clothes. "Let's go out, get some fresh air, and buy you some new clothes."
Giselle nodded and followed her out into the hallway. She nervously glanced around the opulent, heavily guarded estate. "Where exactly are we? Why are there armed guards patrolling the halls? Are those submachine guns?"
Loyce led her through an indoor botanical garden toward the dining hall.
Breakfast was already laid out. Laurence sat in his wheelchair across from Hank, and both men looked up as they walked in.
Laurence's gaze lingered on Giselle's face, his calculating stare making her shrink behind Loyce.
He offered Loyce a polite smile. "SaintHealer. I never expected our paths to cross in this manner."
Hank had already brought him up to speed on their connection. Laurence was thrilled—it added a massive layer of security to their operation.
Loyce nodded and pulled out a chair for Giselle.
Laurence turned his attention back to Hank. "So, this is the woman you risked an international warrant with the Englorian police to bring back?"
