"Happy Birthday, Ms. Debose!"
The three exchanged brief, polite greetings.
Ashley couldn't help but ask, "And Mr. Cross..."
Brian offered an awkward smile. "Mr. Cross couldn't make it tonight."
Her smile froze instantly, and her thoughts immediately flew to Aurora. In previous years, she had always managed to have Damian by her side.
After the incident, he had shut himself away, refusing to see anyone.
This year, she thought things were looking up and had hoped to invite him, perhaps even introduce him to her parents to see if they could mend their relationship. She never expected Aurora to be this tenacious.
Isabelle noticed the subtle shift in her expression. Looks like Ashley is still holding on. That old flame isn't completely out.
"The word is Aurora isn't feeling well. Mr. Cross probably couldn't get away," Isabelle added.
If I can't snuff it out, redirect the trouble.
Brian's eyes widened as he looked at her. Did she really just say that? Is she trying to stir the pot?
Isabelle subtly pinched Brian's arm. He grimaced, swallowing whatever he was about to say.
A cold smirk touched Ashley's lips.
It was time to cut the cake. Ashley was clearly not thrilled, but she kept her composure.
Isabelle, not seeing that man, felt a pang of disappointment herself.
However, the party was attended by many children of high-ranking officials, a sign of Ashley's father's considerable influence.
"Ms. Foster." A familiar figure appeared before her. It was Daisy.
"Ms. Hughes," Daisy said, not forgetting to nod respectfully to Brian beside her.
Brian acknowledged her with a slight nod of his own.
Isabelle allowed a faint smile and took a sip of her wine. She glanced at Brian, who, understanding, quietly excused himself.
"Thank you," Daisy said, raising her glass to clink with Isabelle's.
Isabelle asked, "For what?"
Daisy gave a derisive chuckle. "For landing me the first major contract since I opened my firm."
Isabelle smiled, "Oh? Congratulations."
Rumor had it that after Isabelle's warning, Daisy had gone back, secretly listened in, and even made a recording. She hadn't drunk the poured wine, switching glasses with the woman next to her.
