Isabelle couldn’t quite put her finger or why, but the man’s retreating figure seemed familiar—almost like Collin.
She could probably guess why Ashley was here, too. If her hunch was correct, it was likely also for Beatrice’s commission.
Still, if that man really was Collin, then the two of them
Isabelle knew Ashley and Collin had been classmates, but they weren’t particularly close. Running into each other and exchanging a brief greeting wasn’t all that unusual.
They didn’t dwell on it, adjusted their hats, and continued on.
“I made reservations at a farm–to–table spot up ahead. We can head straight thereafter we finish exploring,” Kylie had arranged things quite thoughtfully.
“How can we let you drive and cover all the expenses?” Diana laughed. “We’ll handle today’s meal. You just focus on getting us back safely.”
Accepting too many favors felt awkward.
They really hadn’t known each other long, and it didn’t sit quite right..
Kylie waved her hand generously. “What are you talking about! I’ve learned so much just tagging along with you two today! Honestly, I never really expected to land the commission for Beatrice anyway. My main goal was to learn from you both. Consider it my tuition!”
Isabelle was about to–object, but Kylie cut in warmly, “Seriously, this is experience money can’t buy. If you don’t let me cover this, I’d feel too embarrassed to keep asking for your advice!”
She made her point so earnestly that Isabelle and Diana couldn’t really refuse.
The two of them could only smile and relent.
Kylie was known in their circles for her bright, upbeat personality–and her reputation was genuinely spotless.
“Hey, could I visit your studio sometime?” Kylie leaned closer to Isabelle.
“Of course, but you’ll have to chip in for coffee and pastries,” Isabelle chuckled.
“Absolutely!” Kylie, having gotten her way, looked thoroughly pleased.
The three of them toured Beatrice’s former home, lingered in the area a while longer, then headed to the rustic restaurant up the lane for lunch.
Just as they entered the patio seating, they saw that familiar man again.
Collin.
Collin noticed them too.
Laurel Valley was especially crowded with visitors that day. The patio was packed, the server was running off her feet, and there wasn’t a single free table.

After a brief exchange of greetings, Collin seemed at a loss for further words.

The hostess, noticing the recognition between the three women and Collin–who was sitting alone at a four top–immediately asked if he’d mind sharing.
Collin said he didn’t mind.
With no other seats in sight, they had little choice but to join him.
“Mr. Dorfman, are you here in Laurel Valley for inspiration too?” Kylie asked brightly..
Collin held a certain prestige in the design world, though his focus was primarily menswear.
But for a newcomer like Kylie, getting to encounter so many established figures at once was thrilling.
Diana stayed quiet, simply noting that the person they’d glimpsed earlier really had been Collin.
Collin glanced at Isabelle, who was scrolling through her phone, and said, “I came these past couple of days to soak in the local atmosphere and scenery.”
“What a coincidence! We’re here gathering inspiration for Beatrice’s wardrobe,” Kylie said, pouring water for everyone at the table.
Diana couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Dorfman, you’re not here working on concepts for Ryan, are you?”
“Yes.” Collin nodded.
That made sense. It seemed everyone’s paths were converging here.
Collin paused, then added, “Actually, our research could be complementary. Beatrice and Ryan will undoubtedly attend events together. If the designs share some visual harmony, the impact would be even stronger.”
Future collaborations would likely increase, too.
Isabelle and Diana naturally understood this, but…
“I don’t mean anything by it. I’ve been here a couple of days and am about to head back. Our approaches might differ, but we could certainly share references. There’s no direct competition between us. As colleagues, I’d be happy to pass along what I’ve
r gathered.”
He intended to send them a copy of his compiled materials.
Diana suddenly thought this was a sensible approach. She glanced sideways at Isabelle. Isabelle hesitated for a moment but remained silent.
Diana took on the task of responding.
