Earlier, when Lucas‘ family had called, they’d asked him to keep an eye on Lynn, and he’d actually nodded in agreement, in the past, he wouldn’t have even acknowledged the request.
Today really was all upside down.
Lucas felt like he was changing.

Early the next morning, Isabelle rolled over and felt every joint protest, the stiffness and aches settling deep into her muscles.
She turned her head toward the tent opening. It was unusually quiet outside, but her attention shifted to Lynn, who was already awake and struggling to sit up beside her.
“Are you hurt?” Isabelle slowly pushed herself up and asked softly.
“Probably…”
Lynn braced her hands beside her, carefully extending her legs. They felt/heavy and numb, but the sharp pull from the scrape on her knee was unmistakable.
Isabelle quickly got out of bed and slipped on her shoes.
She wanted to help but wasn’t sure how.
“I need to get these pants off,” Lynn said.
She had a pretty clear idea of where she’d been injured.
She’d spent most of yesterday kneeling while treating Diana and had scraped her knee; later, during the rescue efforts, she’d taken a hard fall. At the time, it hadn’t seemed serious–her focus was entirely on the people who needed help–so she’d ignored it.
Isabelle helped her onto the cot, then turned her back to give her privacy.
Lynn
eased her pants down behind her.
“Ouch-” Lynn let out a sharp gasp.
The wound had seeped, and some blood had dried, gluing the fabric to the broken skin. Peeling the pants away tore the scab open again. This second injury was almost as painful as the first.
“I don’t have any antiseptic left here. Could you go next door and ask to borrow some?” Lynn asked, frowning slightly.
“Okay,” Isabelle said quickly and stepped out.
As Lynn tried to adjust into a more comfortable position, the jacket Lucas had left behind slipped from her shoulders onto the cot.
She froze for a moment, not immediately processing it. Then her eyes caught the name “Lucas” embroidered on the collar.

He even tell that, in a way, this was fine. If Diana sull wanted to keep things this way in the end, Brian was okay with that, too.
Brian gently stroked her sheek, and Diana’s eyes fluttered open.
“Did I… make it to heaven?” Diana asked, brows furrowed.
“You wish. The gates wouldn’t open for you. Looking like this, they’d probally send you back,” Brian grumbled, “What were you thinking, going back for that elderly woman anyway?”

Lynn still didn’t dare lower her hands.
Lucas let out a quiet scoff, pulled the sheet from Isabelle’s cot, and wrapped it firmly around Lynn’s want covering her
before roughly taking the jacket from her legs and draping it over her shoulders,
Then he picked up the water bottle and tissues and began carefully cleaning her wand.
“Should’ve said something,” Lucas muttered under his breath.
He was calling her foolish for not mentioning she was hurt.
Only then did Lynn peer at him through her fingers.
At least he was decent enough to…
No, there was no “at least” about it…
Right now, he was just another responder doing his job. What he was doing was no different from what any of them would do There was no reason to read anything into it.
“Why are you still here?” A sharp wave of hurt washed over Lynn, and her voice lost its usual steady calm as she spoke.

“Of course. Have I ever lied to you?” Damian smitted. After a pause, he added, “You should head back on the next flight “Aren’t you coming?” Isabelle looked at him seriously.
Damian might not return right away–every year around this season, unexpected natural disasters occurred. Ever since his recovery, as long as there were no urgent matters at the company, he would join Lucas in volunteer response efforts.
But his legs…
Isabelle had asked Lynn before, but Lynn hadn’t elaborated, only saying he needed to be careful and that it wasn’t too serious.
Still, she worried.
“There’s not too much work left here. It’ll only take a few days to wrap up.”
“Then I’ll stay, too.”
“Don’t be stubborn,” Damian said, his tone firm.
There was no way he would let Isabelle remain in these conditions.
Isabelle knew that in her state, staying wasn’t an option–but she didn’t want Damian to stay behind either.
“Be good. I’ll be back soon,” he said softly.
Damian led her into a supply tent and changed into the rugged outdoor gear Lucas had prepared for him.
Isabelle couldn’t stop him, so she quietly helped smooth out his/jacket.
His sense of duty ran deep–he would never stand idle when he could help. That had always been true.
“Promise me you’ll listen, alright?” Damian gently cupped her cheek and gave her a careful, lingering hug.
“Okay.” Isabelle nodded.
He walked out without looking back.
