Lucas glanced at her. There was still a half-eaten potato chip clinging to her lip, and her eyes were wide with panic, like a student caught by the hall monitor.

He bent down to change his shoes. “Doing some… research?” he asked with a hint of a smirk.

“What?”

It wasn’t until then that Lynn realized the movie she’d been playing had just reached an intensely passionate scene between the main characters.

“This one isn’t quite suitable. I’ll find some better material for us to… study together later,” Lucas said as he walked toward her.

Finally catching his meaning, a blush instantly warmed Lynn’s cheeks. She flailed around, desperately searching for the remote.

Instead of finding it, she knocked the bag of chips off her lap and onto the floor.

Lucas let out a low laugh. He set the breakfast bag he was holding aside and carefully cleaned up the mess for her.

Lynn quickly tucked her feet back and grabbed the throw blanket beside her, wrapping it tightly around herself.

“Too late. Already saw everything I needed to see,” Lucas said, his voice slightly rough.

He’d seen it all when he walked in.

She wasn’t wearing anything underneath. The two prominent points were faintly visible through the thin black spaghetti straps, and the short slip barely reaching her thighs did little to hide the black lace underwear beneath.

“Lucas, you’re such a jerk, you know that?” Lynn fumed. “I thought you left! Why are you back?”

“I was afraid you’d starve, so I went down to get you some breakfast,” Lucas said, finishing his cleanup and placing the takeout bag on the coffee table in front of her.

She was hungry, but with Lucas right there, reaching for it would mean giving him another eyeful.

Being seen earlier was bad enough-she couldn’t let it happen again.

“What, not hungry? Or did you hurt your hand, too? Need me to feed you?” Lucas teased.

“You know exactly why I’m not moving. Don’t make me spell it out. I really hate it when you act like this,” Lynn muttered.

“How should I act for you to like me, then?”

“I don’t like you acting like this at all,” she blurted out.

Lucas paused for a split second, his expression unreadable. “I’ll be back at noon. Don’t go wandering off on your own.”

Marriage was for a lifetime. If she knew she’d be unhappy later, she’d rather stay single. Being alone was far more comfortable.

She was already planning to secretly change the door code he’d seen last night, right after he left.

She was just mustering a smile to say goodbye when he spoke, as if reading her mind.

“Don’t even think about changing the code. Or I’ll take the door off its hinges.”

Lynn forced a smile and quickly denied it. “As if I would-‘

Lucas gave a short, dismissive laugh and turned to leave.

Lynn’s smile stayed frozen on her face until the door clicked shut. Then she finally dropped the act.

“Ugh! What kind of man is that? So annoying! A total creep! Absolutely shameless!”

She grumbled the complaints under her breath.

Lucas left and headed straight for the hospital.

When he arrived, Louis and Regina were standing outside the operating room, waiting.

“Louis, Regina,” Lucas greeted.

“Lucas, you came too?” Louis and Regina looked tense. They tried to smile in return but couldn’t quite manage it.
