"In a bar, the most obvious people are the ones who don't dance," Diana said, nodding towards the crowd. "Your husband is one, and the other is the damsel in distress over there. You can't miss her."
Isabelle looked in the direction she indicated.
Aurora was drinking alone, steadily pouring herself more.
Nearby, Ashley and Lucas were deep in conversation.
Damian walked back to the group, but he didn't sit beside Aurora. Instead, he went over to Alaric, clapped him on the shoulder, and said a few words.
Alaric, understanding the cue, moved to sit next to Aurora. Damian then started talking with some of the other guys.
Aurora seemed surprised and a bit awkward to find Alaric sitting beside her. By then, she was pretty drunk, and she had no choice but to let Alaric help her up and lead her away.
"Your man's not bad," Diana remarked.
"Is he?" Isabelle hadn't really noticed. She still felt a pang from that night he ran out.
Sure, a buddy's sister, a last request... he couldn't just ignore that. But something about it still felt off.
Diana said, "I'm talking about boundaries. He knows how to draw the line."
Isabelle stole a glance at Damian and happened to meet his deep eyes. He tilted his head slightly as if asking, "Something wrong?"
She quickly looked away, startled.
Meanwhile, Diana, who had finally caught her breath, looked warily at Brian, who was leisurely sipping his drink nearby. She turned to Isabelle.
"Brian helped me check out that apartment. He said it's a pre-owned unit from a relative, a real steal. Over 3,000 square feet, in the city center, for just over two hundred thousand dollars. But it looked freshly renovated to me. Is Brian reliable? He's not trying to pawn off some... you know, unlucky place on me, is he?"
Isabelle replied, "No way. We're close. He's always been solid."
"What does his family do?"
"They own a ranch. I've been a few times for class reunions."
Diana let out a sigh of relief. Ranch folks. Honest. Probably wouldn't screw her over.
Brian, bored, leaned in. "What's the secret gossip? Spill it, let me in on the fun."
"We're discussing exactly how much Mr. Cross pays you," Isabelle said, picking up her glass of Jungle Juice and clinking it against his.
Brian's salary was indeed a mystery. He did a lot more for Damian than just regular work.
"That depends entirely on the boss' wife," Brian said with a grin. "If she's happy, I eat well. If she's upset, I might be scraping by on bread and water next month."
Laughter rippled through their booth.
Damian's gaze kept drifting back to her. Ashley noticed and followed his line of sight, seeing Isabelle, Diana, and Brian huddled together.
Could it be... is Damian actually interested in Diana? Was the "secret" woman Aurora mentioned actually Diana? I've seen Brian driving Diana around lately, and Damian does seem nicer to her than to others... Yep, it's definitely Diana.
Ashley took a sip of her drink, a slight smile touching her lips. If it's just a fling... then I still have a chance.
