Some time passed.
The cool, early autumn drizzle blurred the skyscrapers outside the window into a hazy gray.
Victoria sat by the floor-to-ceiling window of the coffee shop, her fingertips tracing the cool glass as she stared blankly at the scene outside.
“Miss Sanger.”
Saul’s voice, cautious as always, sounded beside her.
The sound brought Victoria back to the present. She gently pushed the retainer agreement across the table with her fingertips.
Saul looked up at Victoria, then his gaze fell to the agreement on the table. He swallowed the words “Please reconsider” that were on the tip of his tongue.
Victoria’s expression was serene, a faint curve on her lips. “Have a seat,” she said softly. “Mr. Flint must have told you.”
Saul murmured an affirmation and sat down. He took a plane ticket from the inner pocket of his suit jacket and pushed it toward her. “Miss Sanger, this is the ticket you asked me to book a few days ago.”
The destination was a coastal city in the Southern Hemisphere, with a departure time set for the morning after tomorrow.
After a moment, his eyes returned to the agreement, and he spoke hesitantly, “The Sanger Group has been through some turmoil these past few years, but its foundations are still solid. As long as we stabilize the projects—”
“Saul,” Victoria interrupted him. “Don’t try to convince me. I’m just… tired.”
“I trust you to manage The Sanger Group well for me, my father, and my brother.”
Her voice was quiet, but left no room for argument.
Saul couldn’t help but sigh. Staring at Victoria’s delicate yet resolute signature on the agreement, his own voice grew tight. “But Miss Sanger, Imperial City is your home, after all. And Genevieve has been dealt with, she’s in a psychiatric hospital…”
“I almost wish this wasn’t my home.” Victoria picked up the ticket, her finger tracing the gate number. “My father is gone, my brother is still in a coma. Every brick in this city is soaked in blood.”
