The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 123

“I’ve got a meeting to get to. Do your thing, and let Lance know that if he books my hotel, I’ll give him an eleven percent discount.”

Gavin stood up, straightened his suit, and basically escorted her out.

Catherine felt this knot of anxiety twisting tighter in her chest. She got up and hurried after him. “Gavin, getting engaged isn’t something you joke about. You can’t just play around with this!”

What really gave her a headache was how Adelina always shoved everything onto her, whether it was good or bad. If this engagement didn’t go through, there was no way she’d be able to leave quietly either.

“Seriously, I’m going to be late for my interview!” Gavin checked his watch and darted off, barely looking back.

He was already moving fast, and Catherine scrambled after him. She caught up at the elevator, but his bodyguards stepped in front of her.

“Gavin!” she called, her voice sharp with frustration.

“I need to look over my interview notes,” he said, waving a stack of papers and pretending to study them. “Gotta memorize this stuff. It’s live. I can’t screw it up.”

Catherine could only watch as the elevator doors slid shut. Just before they closed, Gavin glanced at her with that same careless, teasing look.

A wave of dread washed over her.

Before she could even gather her thoughts, her phone started ringing. It was a video call from Shirley.

She turned around and headed back toward the banquet hall, answering the call and quickly panning her camera around to capture the whole space.

“The last two hotels are on you. I’m taking the rest of the day off.”

Just because Catherine was taking a break didn’t mean the engagement planning could stop.

Shirley’s eyes lit up. This was the perfect chance to push Catherine out of the way and take her place.

But she still wanted to make things difficult. “You’re supposed to be responsible for this from start to finish. Go film the other two hotels, then we’ll talk.”

“If you’d just answered my call, I’d be done already. And if you don’t want Adelina blaming you for holding things up, maybe drop the attitude.”

Catherine hung up and immediately blocked Shirley’s number.

She waited outside the hotel for a while, hoping to catch Gavin as he left, but he must have known she’d try. After his interview, he slipped out the back.

She tried calling him, but he didn’t answer.

He did send her a message, though.
