The next morning, Catherine got a call from Amanda. She needed two hundred thousand up front for medical bills.
Catherine went straight to the bank, emptied out her savings, and sent the money to Amanda’s account.
She still had two unused vacation days and hadn’t decided how she’d explain her time off to work yet. Instead of worrying about it, she figured she might as well go to the hospital and check in on Patty.
An hour later, Catherine showed up at the hospital, arms full of fresh fruit. She pushed open the door to the room.
Zandra and Adonis were sitting together on the bed. When they saw her, they smiled in recognition.
Catherine moved past them, but stopped in her tracks when she noticed who was standing beside Patty.
“Catherine?” Amanda looked startled and quickly got up from the bed. “I told you, you didn’t have to come!”
Catherine set the fruit on the table and spoke softly. “I’ve got two days off left. Just wanted to see how things are going.”
She glanced over at Gavin, who was leaning against the window with that ever-present easy grin.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“Heard you were having some trouble,” Gavin said, his smile never wavering. “Figured I’d drop by and see what I could do.” Noticing Catherine’s tight expression, he quickly added, “I was just telling Amanda, I’ll handle Patty’s donor match. Don’t worry about it.”
Catherine looked at Amanda for confirmation.
Amanda nodded right away. “Yeah, Gavin’s already got it all lined up.”
Catherine didn’t know how to feel about Gavin. She couldn’t really like him, but she didn’t totally dislike him either. He wasn’t always reliable, but he always showed up when it counted. Still, he had this way of treating her problems like entertainment, as if he was just waiting for her life to blow up.
“Thank you,” she said.
“Seriously, it’s nothing. If you need anything else, just ask.” Gavin thumped his chest confidently. “I even know the hospital director.”
Hearing that, Zandra and Adonis both glanced over.
In just a few days, Zandra looked like she’d lost a lot of weight. She was much more worn out than when Catherine first met her. During the nights Catherine spent at the hospital, she’d often hear Zandra quietly groaning in pain.
“Can you help me get an appointment with a specialist in internal medicine? As soon as possible,” Catherine asked.
