After a quick chat, she slipped out of the hospital room.
The elevator was packed, so Catherine decided to take the stairs down to the first floor. As she reached the center of the lobby, she spotted Lance pushing Adelina’s wheelchair out of the elevator. Adelina’s lower leg was wrapped in a cast. She wore a crisp white dress, a pink blanket draped over her knees.
Lance walked behind her in a black suit, looking cold and distant, a vibe that warned people to keep their distance. Their bodyguards moved ahead, parting the crowded hall and opening a path. By pure coincidence, Catherine was standing at the very end of that path.
She realized too late and tried to step away, but she couldn’t move fast enough.
“Catherine.” Adelina called out first, her voice gentle.
Catherine stopped in her tracks and turned. “Lance. Adelina.”
“Lance, let’s go over,” Adelina said, reaching for Lance’s hand.
He nodded, then pushed her wheelchair over to Catherine.
Adelina looked up at Catherine, her eyes sincere. “I want to apologize for my mom. She misunderstood you and gave you a hard time because of me. I hope you won’t hold it against her.”
Catherine’s lashes fluttered. She looked at Adelina, unsure what to make of her. Was this really the same Adelina who used to be so proud and overbearing? Was she seriously apologizing for Sarah?
Adelina kept going. “I know I’ve caused you a lot of trouble, and I promise it won’t happen again. I hope you can stay on at SilverLeaf and keep helping Lance out. Would you?”
She seemed so genuine. Catherine couldn’t tell if any of it was real, or just another act. Maybe Gavin had something to do with this sudden change? The chance to return to SilverLeaf had practically landed at her feet. Still, it felt shaky, like the ground could give way at any moment. A thread of unease tugged at her.
But then she thought of Patty’s medical bills, thought of how badly she needed the money.
“Adelina, you’re making it sound too serious. There’s no need to apologize. As long as the misunderstanding is cleared up, that’s all I care about. It’s my honor to keep working for Lance.”
Under the blanket, Adelina’s hand was clenched tight on the edge of her dress. On her face, though, there was only a soft smile. “I’m glad to hear that. You’re so generous, Catherine.”
